Swift announced on July 9, 2026 that its blockchain-based ledger is ready for initial use, and 17 banks from six continents will pilot the use of tokenized deposits for real-time cross-border payments.
Tokenized deposits are digital representations of bank-issued currency recorded in a shared ledger. Unlike stablecoins, which are usually issued by non-bank entities and backed by reserves, tokenized deposits are still direct liabilities of the issuing bank and are subject to existing banking supervision and deposit insurance frameworks.
The pilot\'s first real-time use case allows participating banks to transfer these tokenized deposits for customers around the clock, but final settlement is still processed through existing payment systems. This is a pilot, not a commercial promotion; the difference between the two is that whether it can be put into practical application will depend on the results of this testing phase.
In a multi-bank environment, blockchain bookkeeping is important because it provides a shared, tamper-proof record that all participants can refer to without relying solely on bilateral messaging. For cross-border payments, multiple intermediaries and time zones can cause friction, and sharing bookkeeping can reduce reconciliation delays.

Swift said that 17 banks from six continents have participated in the pilot. This geographical coverage distinguishes it from blockchain experiments in a single area and demonstrates the coordinated interest of institutions in tokenized payment infrastructure.
Swift\'s status as the backbone of interbank messaging, connecting more than 11,000 institutions around the world, gives the pilot weight that independent blockchain projects lack. When Swift tests the infrastructure, participating banks are already embedded in the network that will eventually host the technology on a large scale.
However, participation in the pilot does not guarantee practical application. Banks may exit based on costs, regulatory developments or technical results. The pilot is a signal of interest rather than a commitment to deployment.

only took nine months from concept to pilot readiness
Swift said that after announcing the project in September 2025, it designed and built the ledger within nine months based on feedback from financial institutions. In the early stages, more than 30 financial institutions participated in the design of bookkeeping, and Swift collaborated with Consensus sys to develop a conceptual prototype.
Swift also points out that 75% of payments on its existing network reach the receiving bank within 10 minutes, and are usually completed within seconds. Tokenized deposit bookbooks are designed to supplement this speed by achieving 24/7 availability, thereby eliminating reliance on bank operating hours windows where certain channels are still affected.
The move reflects the broader drive by traditional financial institutions to integrate blockchain technology into real-time payment infrastructure. Swift\'s approach differs from the open stablecoin network, which keeps transactions in a regulated, bank-controlled environment.
How tokenized deposits coexist with stablecoins and central bank digital currencies
Tokenized deposits occupy a unique position in the digital currency field. Central bank digital currency is issued by the central bank and represents sovereign currency. Stable coins (such as Circle\'s USDC) are privately issued tokens pegged to fiat currencies. Tokenized deposits fall somewhere in between: they are commercial bank currencies, digitized on a shared ledger, but still backed by the issuing bank\'s balance sheet.
Swift\'s pilot positions tokenized deposits as the form of digital currency most compatible with existing bank compliance, credit risk and settlement frameworks. This positioning avoids the regulatory uncertainty that stablecoins still face in multiple jurisdictions, while regulators are actively reviewing digital asset regulation.
There are still several challenges in advancing the pilot to the practical application stage. Interoperability between the new ledger and existing payment tracks must prove reliable at large scale. Regulatory frameworks for tokenized deposits are still being developed in most jurisdictions. Banks also need to assess whether the operating costs of running on shared booklets are sufficient to justify efficiency improvements relative to existing agent banking models.
The next milestone to pay attention to is the first real-time transaction between pilot banks and the expansion of the participant list. Whether the pilot leads to wider adoption will depend on whether there are measurable improvements in settlement speed, cost or availability compared to Swift\'s existing infrastructure.
