Binance enters traditional finance: Stock trading and tokenized securities are launched simultaneously
Binance is no longer limited to cryptocurrency trading platforms. On Wednesday, the exchange officially opened the door to the core areas of traditional finance, announcing that eligible users can directly trade more than 7000 U.S. listed stocks and exchange-traded funds. At the same time, Binance also demonstrated its tokenized securities product bStocks for the first time, which presents individual stocks as on-chain tokens. The dual move shows that the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange is not only adding asset classes, but also reshaping the infrastructure for retail investment around tokens and smart contracts.
The move comes at a time when real-world asset tokenization is accelerating. At present, the on-chain value of tokenized securities and real-world assets has exceeded US$20 billion, and institutions such as JPMorgan Chase and Ondo Finance directly complete transaction settlement on the blockchain. Binance is entering this wave from a different perspective-it is not a bank or traditional issuer, but an exchange giant with a large base of native crypto users. The combination of stock trading and tokenized representation could accelerate a convergence trend that many traditional brokers have been reluctant to embrace.
Convergence of stocks and cryptocurrencies: Structural shifts
The stock trading function launched this time did not initially tokenize stocks. It operates as a brokerage service through partnerships, allowing users to buy and sell ordinary stocks and ETFs directly within the Binance ecosystem. This changed the original pattern. Traders who previously had to switch between cryptocurrency exchanges and traditional brokers can now allocate Apple stocks or the S & P 500 without leaving the platform. For retail investors who manage both types of portfolios, the long-standing problem of fragmentation of liquidity has been effectively alleviated. But structural transformation goes far beyond convenience.
Cryptocurrency exchanges have long been outside the core regulatory framework of stock markets in major jurisdictions. By entering the U.S. stock market, Binance has directly entered the regulatory field of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and a series of brokerage rules. The company did not disclose details of its licensing arrangements in the press release, but any service that provides U.S. securities to non-U.S. residents will still proceed carefully amid cross-border regulatory frictions. Timing is also crucial: Washington is in the middle of a fierce legislative game over the structure of the cryptocurrency market, and just days before the Senate vote, banks are pushing to weaken a landmark cryptocurrency bill. Binance's aggressive expansion could provide new arguments for both sides of the debate.
bStocks tokenization experiment
The U.S. stock trading function is a real-time service, while the preview of bStocks is a signal. Tokenized securities are not new-Europe has mature issuers and Asia has a growing number of projects-but large exchanges the size of Binance can promote the popularization of forms of equity representation on the chain in ways that small fintech companies cannot. bStocks is likely to map traditional stocks to digital tokens, allowing for 7×24-hour settlement, piecemeal ownership, and composability with the DeFi protocol. However, this vision is not without obstacles. Legal ownership, custody and corporate conduct handling remain unresolved issues for tokenized stocks, and regulators have not yet reached consensus on a unified framework.
Binance is clearly testing market will. By simultaneously previewing bStocks and launching a real-market U.S. stock brokerage service, it is building a bridge: Users accustomed to trading stocks under traditional shells may more easily switch to tokenized versions in the future. If the preview is finally implemented, the product could become a template for centralized exchanges to introduce regulated securities onto the chain without ceding control to decentralized autonomous organizations. This looks more like a vertically integrated, exchange-driven capital market than the early DeFi vision.
Regulatory fog and market impact
Despite the broad prospects, the regulatory environment remains unclear. Binance has faced enforcement actions in multiple jurisdictions, and U.S. authorities have made clear that tokenized stocks must comply with securities laws. Providing tokenized shares to users outside the United States does not eliminate risks, but simply shifts the issue to local regulators and cross-border coordination. The press release did not say which jurisdictions could use the new stock trading feature, leaving uncertainty as to which set of rules the service follows. In markets where Binance holds restricted licenses, selling U.S. stocks could attract scrutiny from securities regulators who are already cautious about cryptocurrency exchanges.
However, user behavior may have exceeded regulatory clarity. Demand for tokenized treasury bonds, tokenized commodities and equity-like products has grown sharply in the past year, often through offshore or semi-regulatory channels. If Binance's entry can be scaled up, it may force competitors to follow suit. Traditional brokers may accelerate their tokenization programs, and decentralized exchange aggregators may try to replicate the bStocks model with permissionless liquidity pools. The final outcome depends on whether regulatory boundaries are tightened before market structures take shape. For now, Binance has fired a shot that will reverberate across cryptocurrency trading desks and traditional broker boards.
