Bitcoin ETF News

According to SoSoValue data, on August 19, the net inflow of U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) was US$517.19 million, the highest single-day record since May 4. Two federal policy announcements have driven gains in the entire cryptocurrency market.

Of the 12 Bitcoin ETFs tracked, 8 recorded positive capital inflows only on a single day. BlackRock's IBIT led the way with $284.7 million, followed by Ark and 21Shares 'ARKB ($77.7 million), and Fidelity's FBTC ($62.4 million).

Treasury repurchase and SEC proposals are seen as catalysts

On August 19, the U.S. Treasury said it would at least double the size of its liquidity-backed repurchase operations on long-term nominal interest-bearing securities of 10 to 30 years. On August 18, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposed a rule that would create two exemptions for certain crypto investment contracts, including a four-year exemption for start-ups with a maximum of $5 million and an annual funding exemption with a maximum of $75 million and subject to disclosure requirements.

Jeff Mei, chief operating officer of cryptocurrency exchange BTSE, directly attributed the inflow of funds to the announcement of the Ministry of Finance. Mei told The Block: "When the Treasury signaled that it would step in to limit Treasury yields, the dollar weakened and risk appetite rebounded, benefiting Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies."

Rachael Lucas, crypto analyst at BTC Markets, pointed out that the composition of capital inflows suggests that the participants are institutional allocators rather than short-term retail investors. "After large outflows from May to June and volatile flows in parts of July and mid-August, net inflow data of this magnitude suggests that large allocators are again viewing current price levels as a constructive entry point," Lucas told The Block. She said the funds came from participants with compliance infrastructure and balance sheets large enough for large-scale operations.

Analysts warn: Don't expect to continue

Both Lucas and Mei said inflows of this size are unlikely to continue. Mei said the outlook depends on whether the Treasury's repurchase program is a continuing initiative, noting next week's CPI data and any public comments by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be key indicators. He also mentioned that the evolution of the US-Iran conflict is a variable affecting the overall pattern.

On August 20, Bitcoin traded at US$69,564, up 8.3% in 24 hours, after exceeding US$69,000 for the first time in two months on August 19. Ethereum (ETH) reported at $2,251, up nearly 18%. XRP and Solana (SOL) rose about 10%. Hyperliquid's HYPE tokens rose 27.48%, after Trump said CFTC Chairman Michael Selig is working to allow the perpetual contract trading platform to enter the United States in a "fully compliant and legal manner." Lighter's native token LIT rose 23.5% to $2.84 over the same period.
