U.S. margin debt soared to US$1.42 trillion, triggering leverage concerns in the crypto market.

U.S. margin debt hit a new high and leverage ratio surged.

According to data released by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), U.S. equity margin debt surged 53.7% year-on-year in May to US$1.42 trillion. This is one of the fastest annual increases since historical data is available.

At this level, U.S. margin debt accounts for approximately 4.44% of the country's GDP. Some researchers call this the highest value in the historical series, while others question whether GDP should be used as the main measure of market leverage.

These divergent views have sparked discussions within the investment circle. One side believes that such high leverage may aggravate the risk of a market correction. The other side points out that indicators adjusted for broader economic and market conditions show that the current environment is not extreme compared to previous peaks.

According to data compiled by Hussman Strategic Advisors, U.S. margin debt has risen to about 4.5% of GDP, surpassing its highs before the bursting of the Internet bubble in 2000 and the 2008 financial crisis.

Some media also warned that although margin debt levels have reached record highs relative to the economy, these data should not be automatically linked to the digital asset ecosystem because of the fundamental differences between traditional markets and crypto markets.

The operating mechanism of crypto levers is different

Experts point out that leverage in the cryptocurrency space is usually operated through exchange liquidity pools rather than relying on the broader financial system. Once a position hits a preset threshold, liquidation of digital assets can be completed in seconds, often driven by automated trading protocols.

In contrast, the margin call process for stockbroking accounts is generally more gradual, involves more steps, and takes longer before forced liquidation.

Market observers further emphasized that leverage in the cryptocurrency market tends to reset frequently in short-term fluctuations, and even if prices fluctuate violently, liquidation events are more isolated. These structural factors mean that record U.S. margin debt does not equate to similar exposure to Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

(Note: FINRA, or the U.S. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, is the largest independent financial regulatory agency in the United States that oversees broker-dealers and aims to protect investors by ensuring market integrity and compliance.)

Negative credit balances signal further risks

In addition to rising margin debt, investors 'net free credit balances continue to deteriorate, reaching negative US$991.7 billion in May 2026. This is the lowest level since FINRA statistical records.

Net free credit balance is a comprehensive indicator of investors 'cash holdings and outstanding margin debt. A deeper negative number indicates that total borrowing in brokerage accounts has significantly exceeded available cash reserves, increasing potential vulnerability when the market declines rapidly.

Monthly data showed margin debt briefly fell in February and March, but rebounded in April and jumped 8.5% in May.

Observers are closely watching subsequent releases of FINRA to determine whether these leverage trends will continue or begin to reverse. The latest data has pushed investor risk appetite and deleveraging dynamics into the focus of attention in the traditional and digital asset spaces.

Analysts in the financial community continue to track high-frequency data and changes in credit balances, constantly asking whether leverage and liquidity may pose systemic risks in the future, although the digital asset market is structurally different from traditional stocks.

The following are key data (May 2026 vs May 2025):

May 2026: U.S. margin debt of US$1.42 trillion, net free credit balance-US$991.7 billion

May 2025: U.S. margin debt of US$924 billion, net free credit balance not listed
