Circle adds Chainlink reserve verification to cirBTC

Core Points

Chainlink releases cirBTC reserve data on the chain. Reported reserves have exceeded the current token supply. Reserve feeds are not audits. The reserve-linked foundry control mechanism has not yet been announced. The direct redemption function is still mainly for qualified institutions.

Changes Chainlink brings to cirBTC

Native Bitcoin cannot be transferred directly in Ethereum smart contracts. Wrapped Tokens address this limitation by allowing BTC to remain in the Bitcoin network while issuing the corresponding token on a programmable blockchain. Circle's cirBTC is already available on Ethereum, and its design ensures that every token issued has at least one BTC in reserve. Users can use the token in compatible applications without having to sell their underlying Bitcoin exposure.

The September 4 update changes the mechanism for monitoring this support. Under Circle's reserve verification model, companies disclose the Bitcoin address where cirBTC reserves are held, while Chainlink Proof of Reserve publishes verified reserve information on the chain.

Unlike traditional reserve pages, on-chain feeds can be read by smart contracts and automated risk systems. Lending agreements can compare reported reserves with cirBTC supply before accepting the token as collateral, provided its developers connect the feed to the agreement's risk control system.

Reported reserves exceed cirBTC supply

According to real-time cirBTC dashboard data released by Circle on September 5, there are approximately 40.03 cirBTC in circulation, while 42.51 BTC held in the disclosed reserve addresses.

cirBTC reserve reading
Dashboard data date: September 5, 2026 8:00 am

  • Token supply: 40.03 cirBTC
  • BTC reserves: 42.51 BTC
  • Calculated surplus: 2.49 BTC
  • Calculated coverage: 106.21%

Earnings and coverage ratios are calculated based on figures released by Circle. The coverage indicator divides reported BTC reserves by the amount of cirBTC supply, treating each cirBTC as a claim backed by one BTC under the model stated by Circle.

In this reading, reserves exceeded supply by approximately 2.49 BTC, although Circle did not describe this difference as a permanent reserve buffer. These values change as tokens are issued or redeemed, and as BTC moves between disclosed addresses.

The current supply of cirBTC is still very small. If it is widely used in lending markets and exchanges, outdated reserve information, thin secondary market liquidity, or interrupted redemption operations will have greater consequences.

What can reserve feeds verify

Chainlink helps users determine whether the BTC held in the Circle disclosure address overrides the cirBTC visible on the chain. This is different from the functional scope of financial audits, which review a wider range of assets, liabilities, controls and legal obligations.

The accuracy of reserve readings also depends on Circle identifying all relevant addresses. Holders also rely on custodians to protect BTC, issuers to process eligible redemption requests, and cirBTC smart contracts to function properly.

Circle said the backing assets are held through a group subsidiary of Circle National Trust, a federally chartered national trust bank overseen by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. According to the company, BTC is segregated from Circle's corporate assets and held for the benefit of cirBTC holders.

The custody structure protects the underlying assets, while Chainlink makes reported reserve data available on the chain. A positive reserve reading does not guarantee immediate redemption, nor does it eliminate operational and smart contract risks.

Circle does not announce automatic casting safeguards

Releases reserve data to allow users and applications to identify potential mismatches. Preventing unsupported releases requires additional control mechanisms to connect this data to the casting process of cirBTC.

Chainlink Reserve Proof supports a rule that prevents the creation of new tokens when verified support falls below a required threshold. However, Circle's announcement only described reserve monitoring and on-chain release, and did not state that cirBTC contracts would automatically block the casting of such circumstances.

Now available: Machine-readable reserve information that can be compared to the amount of cirBTC in circulation.
Unconfirmed: A contract-level rule that automatically prevents additional cirBTC issuance when verified reserves are insufficient.

The recent Chainlink integration in Wyoming illustrates the same design options. As our analysis of Wyoming's on-chain reserve system points out, developers must decide whether the released numbers remain a monitoring tool or become part of executable casting rules.

For cirBTC, the current feed improves detection capabilities. It cannot on its own replace missing bitcoins, complete delayed redemptions, or correct reserve shortages.

Direct redemption still focuses on institutions

Reserve coverage is only one aspect of the reliability of packaged assets. Holders also need to know who can directly exchange tokens for underlying bitcoin.

Circle's development documentation states that qualified companies can cast and redeem cirBTC through Circle Mint. The service uses the same API framework that Circle provides for USDC and EURC.

Traders may still be able to obtain cirBTC through an exchange or decentralized liquidity pool without qualifying for a Circle Mint account. When withdrawing a position, the trader will rely on the secondary market or qualified intermediary rather than making a redemption directly with Circle.

This distinction becomes particularly important during times of market stress. When direct redemption is limited to a narrow group and secondary markets are illiquid, fully supported tokens may temporarily fall below the value of their underlying assets.

Circle uses a similar institution-centered distribution model elsewhere. Standard Chartered Bank's integration of USDC mindings and redemptions shows that eligible institutions can access Circle-issued assets through regulated intermediaries without having to maintain a direct relationship with Circle.

Liquidity and DeFi adoption will be the next test

Circle plans to add native cirBTC support (subject to approval) at the launch of Arc's main network, and expects other blockchain integrations later. Expansion across multiple networks will make aggregated supply tracking even more important because all issued tokens ultimately rely on the same underlying Bitcoin reserves.

CirBTC's progress can be measured by its circulating supply, secondary market liquidity, redemption access and acceptance as collateral. The agreement document will also show whether the DeFi app will only display Chainlink reserve readings or use it to impose collateral restrictions.

The remaining technical question is whether Circle or integrated protocols will connect reserve feeds to controls to prevent further issuance or increased exposure when verified BTC support is insufficient.
