British Bitcoin investors successfully recovered 61 BTC after losing access for more than a decade

A British Bitcoin investor successfully recovered 61 BTC after losing access to early cryptocurrency assets for more than a decade. The asset was initially rendered inaccessible by the disappearance of Intersango, the early British exchange, and has now transformed into wealth worth millions of pounds.

The investor, known only as "Chris", purchased the 61 BTC through Intersango in 2011, when Bitcoin was trading at about £ 2.94. On May 28 this year, after Chris instructed CEL Law Firm to pursue recovery of the assets in January, he recovered the 61 BTC in full. By the time the recycling was completed, the value of these coins had reached £ 3.33 million.

Banking records ownership: Fifteen years back

Intersango started in early 2011, was originally named Britcoin, and then operated under the name Intersango. The platform supports Bitcoin trading with British Pound, US Dollar, Euro and Polish Zloty, but stopped trading in British Pound and US Dollar at the end of 2012 and closed the website in early 2014. The company was eventually dissolved in March 2016.

Chris reopened the case in 2026 after years of being unable to access his Bitcoin. Restoring ownership of these coins requires historical evidence of ownership, including bank records dating back nearly 15 years, as well as professional blockchain tracking technology and documents related to overseas litigation.

The case was resolved within four months rather than going through a lengthy and controversial trial. This recall is different from bitcoins whose private keys have been destroyed or lost and are truly inaccessible, because Intersango still controlled the coins at the time, making ownership determination and legal recourse a core issue.

This difference frustrated other early holders. For example, James Howells has been trying for years to retrieve a hard drive containing thousands of BTC from a landfill in Wales, including a robot-assisted excavation plan proposed after the equipment was discarded in 2013.

More than 5,500 BTC's have been traced to former Intersango users

More than 5,500 BTC's have been traced so far and are believed to be related to former Intersango customers who failed to withdraw funds before the exchange disappeared. Based on Bitcoin's price of approximately $80,000, the market value of the assets exceeds $440 million, although individual ownership statements still need to be further established.

Old email accounts, correspondence with exchanges, and bank statements showing payments to Intersango can be used as valid evidence of a link between previous customers and historical balances. California litigation related to remaining assets also provides a way for users seeking to confirm their rights.

Bitcoin that is dormant or inactive for a long time does not necessarily mean that it is lost permanently. Earlier this year, a move of 999.6846 BTC came from an address found obsolete in the lawsuit, indicating that inactive blockchain addresses may still have holders who can sign transactions.

Every bitcoin within the scope of the claim was returned

Chris received all 61 BTC covered by his claim, rather than cash compensation based on their historical value. He said some of the recovered funds will be used to purchase larger family homes, while most of the Bitcoin will continue to be invested.

For former Britcoin and Intersango customers, proving the existence of old account balances remains a critical step. The more than 5,500 BTC's that have been traced to date provide additional claims for users who can link surviving emails, account details or bank records to assets held after the exchange closed.
