Former Ripple CTO David Schwartz: XRP's market value is expected to surpass Bitcoin
According to David Schwartz, former Ripple chief technology officer, XRP's market value may eventually surpass Bitcoin. However, while this comment sparked enthusiasm among XRP supporters, the data suggests that to achieve this "anti-overtaking", the token's value and adoption rate need to expand significantly.
During an X Spaces discussion on September 9, Schwartz was asked if he really believed XRP could surpass Bitcoin. He gave an affirmative answer while making an important distinction: XRP needs to grow faster than Bitcoin, rather than relying on a decline in Bitcoin's value.
This argument is based on the possibility that the digital asset market will continue to expand. In this case, the prices of both assets may rise, and XRP will occupy a larger market share thanks to its ledger's high speed, transaction capacity and application-focused scenarios.
Schwartz is optimistic about growth, not the collapse of Bitcoin.
A similar situation occurred in early 2018, when XRP briefly became the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value. According to CNBC, its market value was about 40% of Bitcoin's market value at the time, but today it is only about 5.6%.
Current market gaps make this forecast difficult to achieve. Currently, Bitcoin has a market value of approximately US$1.54 trillion, while XRP has a market value of approximately US$86.8 billion. This means that the value of Bitcoin is approximately 18 times that of XRP.
With approximately 62.7 billion XRP coins in circulation, assuming Bitcoin's valuation remains unchanged, the XRP transaction price needs to reach approximately US$24.60 to match Bitcoin's current market value. If the price of Bitcoin rises, the required XRP price will be higher. Therefore, this is not a specific price target, but a measure of the scale of growth required for XRP.
Long-term vision rather than short-term forecast
Schwartz's comments describe a long-term possibility rather than an imminent forecast. For XRP to surpass Bitcoin, it will require stronger institutional demand, broader network use, and continued market expansion.
As of press time, Bitcoin and XRP were trading at US$77,250 and US$1.35 respectively.
