The Bitcoin blockchain is called immutable because all blocks are connected to their previous block via cryptographic signatures. When someone tamper with a previous transaction, they change the hash value of the block and break the chain, thereby being discovered.
Decentralization adds another layer of security. Because the same records are stored on thousands of computers around the world, hackers have no chance to attack only a single target. Any false changes that might be made would require verification by more than half the network, which is highly unlikely to happen.
Bitcoin blockchain versus traditional ledgers
Banks and other financial institutions maintain their own ledgers under their control, managed by a single organization and with modification rights over the records. These ledgers are private and open only to authorized personnel.
Bitcoin is the opposite. Its ledger does not belong to any party, but is scattered across thousands of independent nodes. The network verifies transactions, groups them into blocks and connects them without the need for intermediaries.
Anyone can view Bitcoin's transaction history, which is public. However, the identity of the person behind the address is not directly linked to the data.
Conclusion
The Bitcoin blockchain is more than just hype; it is the key to achieving a decentralized, trusted digital currency. Node and initiate transactions to synchronize globally, working together to keep the BTC ledger secure.
By removing banks or third parties, it places transaction control directly in the hands of users through peer-to-peer networks.
