Expert analysis: Why is he still optimistic about XRP when prices are slowing?

XRP investor Terrell Williams believes that investors may have underestimated XRP's long-term potential because they are too focused on its current price fluctuations. He posted on Platform X (formerly Twitter) saying that holding today's XRP is similar to investing in a large Internet company before mainstream technology became popular. He pointed out that if institutional adoption accelerates, XRP is expected to achieve significant value growth.

Williams admitted that some XRP holders have witnessed the asset go through a long sideways consolidation phase. He mentioned that XRP reached a level of about $3 last year and then fell back to around $1.50. However, he urged investors to evaluate the financial infrastructure developed around XRP rather than judging its potential based solely on current market prices.

Focus on cross-border payments and utility value

Williams views XRP primarily as a utility-oriented asset that can support cross-border financial flows. He contrasts this use case with Bitcoin, which he sees primarily as a store of value rather than a payment and liquid asset.

He said XRP could support trillions of dollars in cross-border capital flows while promoting the development of tokenized financial assets. He pointed out that the existing international financial system is too time-consuming and costly for certain cross-border transactions. Traditional international transfers can take several working days, sometimes with fees as high as 3% to 5%, while XRP-based transfers can be completed in seconds and cost as little as a fraction of a cent.

Williams acknowledged that financial institutions cannot complete the transition immediately. Banks and other institutions still need to develop infrastructure that can support broader blockchain adoption. He also believes that XRP may not experience sustained exponential price increases until institutions start using the asset on a large scale. In his view, retail activity alone cannot generate the liquidity XRP needs to support long-term investors expect price increases.

Institutional adoption remains a key factor

Williams identified institutional adoption as the main factor in determining XRP's future performance. He said regulatory developments involving the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) could create more opportunities for institutions to enter the cryptocurrency market. However, he also acknowledged that regulatory clarity does not automatically lead to agency adoption.

Williams also questioned whether institutions would rely solely on stablecoins for settlement. He questioned whether financial institutions issuing their own stablecoins would always use a single centralized stablecoin to facilitate transactions with other institutions. Instead, Williams sees utility-oriented assets like XRP as potentially useful in liquidity and cross-border settlements. He noted that the infrastructure built around XRP over the past decade or so suggests that the market has yet to see the scale of institutional liquidity he expected.

Patience is crucial

Williams believes that XRP investors need to distinguish between the development of financial infrastructure and the arrival of widespread institutional adoption. He said existing technology infrastructure was sufficient to support large-scale liquidity flows, but he did not expect significant price expansions until institutions began deploying these liquidity on a large scale. If that adoption occurs, he expects the resulting demand will create a completely different market environment for XRP.
