What will be done to the returned bitcoins
On October 6, 2026, federal authorities transferred 264.863 BTC worth approximately US$23 million to Coinbase. The funds originated from the Bitfinex theft in 2016 and were part of a court-enforced compensation plan rather than an asset liquidation exercise. According to a 2025 federal court ruling, confiscated bitcoins must be returned to Bitfinex in cryptocurrency rather than converted into fiat currency.
Bitfinex plans to deploy these assets to meet its obligations to holders of Recovery Right Tokens and perform repurchase and destruction operations of LEO tokens. Despite these and other recent outflows, the U.S. government still holds large reserves of bitcoin.
Other wallet developments from the U.S. Marshals Service
This week, federal authorities executed a major bitcoin transfer linked to one of the cryptocurrency industry's most notorious security flaws. On October 6, 2026, a blockchain address associated with the U.S. Marshals Service sent approximately 264.863 BTC, worth nearly $22.87 million, to the Coinbase escrow service.
On the same day, the U.S. government also transferred another 834 BTC (worth approximately US$71.56 million) and 40,285 BNB (worth approximately US$31.63 million). Among them, 834 BTC have been deposited into the Coinbase Prime account.
These digital assets can be traced back to the Bitfinex security incident in 2016, when malicious attackers stole approximately 119,754 BTC from the exchange platform. The breach was one of the most serious financial losses in digital asset history.
This particular transaction is part of a broader pattern of on-chain activity. In the same 24 hours, government-controlled wallets relocated 833.6 BTC pieces worth a total of approximately $71 million, the first such activity at these addresses since August 26, 2026.
Blockchain intelligence expert Sani (running timechainindex.com) initially identified the movements. He recorded an initial test transaction, sending 0.00115539 BTC to Coinbase Prime, and then executed the main transfer.
The same wallets also relocated US$31.63 million in BNB related to confiscated FTX assets. This included a verified transfer of 0.127 BNB, followed by a larger transfer of 40,285.07 BNB.
Another transfer of 568 BTC originated from the Potapenko-Turogin criminal case. The indictment revolved around a fake cloud mining company called Hashflare, which promoted mining contracts backed by non-existent data center infrastructure.
Despite these recent outflows, the amount of Bitcoin held by the federal government is still considerable. The latest data shows that the U.S. government currently retains approximately 323,693.83 BTC units, with an estimated market value of US$27.72 billion.
The 264.863 BTC allocated to Bitfinex compensation only represents a small portion of the government's overall crypto asset position.
