Quantum computing threats intensify, cryptocurrencies urgently need transformation
In recent years, the rapid development of quantum computing technology has once again pushed the "quantum threat" to the forefront of security issues of cryptocurrencies (especially Bitcoin). Once a sufficiently powerful quantum computer is available, the cryptographic system on which current cryptocurrencies rely may be cracked, raising deep concerns about the long-term security of digital assets. Therefore, in the cryptocurrency field, the transition to anti-quantum technology and preparing existing networks to withstand quantum attacks is becoming increasingly urgent.
The first quantum security transaction completed!
In this context, StarkWare announced that it has completed its first transaction on the Bitcoin main network designed to defend against quantum computing security threats. The company said that the quantum-resistant transaction uses "Quantum Secure Bitcoin"(QSB) technology and was successfully executed on the Bitcoin main network and has been confirmed by miners.
Thestatement explained that QSB technology does not follow traditional elliptic curve cryptography, but uses a hash-based anti-quantum cryptographic system to withstand attacks from quantum algorithms.
What is the role of QSB technology?
A large part of Bitcoin's current security architecture relies on elliptic curve-based cryptography methods such as ECDSA and Schnorr. According to analysis, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer can overcome these mathematical problems through Shoor's algorithm, thereby deriving the private key from the public key. This could put Bitcoin addresses whose public keys have been made public at risk of quantum attacks.
Therefore, the most important feature of QSB technology is that it can be immediately deployed and implemented within existing script standards without changing the consensus algorithm of Bitcoin or conducting soft forks. In addition, the QSB has implemented an additional protection mechanism to prevent the public key from being compromised before the transaction is confirmed by the Bitcoin network.
High cost is a current problem
It is worth noting that a significant shortcoming of QSB is that it is very costly to compute compared to existing Bitcoin transactions. In a study published in April 2026 by StarkWare researcher Avihu Levy predicted that the cost of creating a QSB process would be approximately $75 to $150. However, after actual testing on the main web, the cost was reported to be around $150 to $200, or even higher. In addition, the calculation process takes hours.
Therefore, QSB is currently seen more as an experimental anti-quantum protection method for high-value Bitcoin assets than as an economical alternative to daily Bitcoin transfers.
