Analysis of Bitcoin Network Transfer Cost: Why Now is the Best Time to Check Your Wallet

Currently, a transfer on the Bitcoin Network costs about 10 cents. Consolidating 20 separate amounts in your wallet costs less than 1 euro. Both numbers can be calculated directly from current rates, which is a great time to take a look at your wallet. This analysis was completed by cryptoticker.io on September 9, 2026.



Starting status: The median rate has long been at its lowest level

The median fee rate of the Bitcoin network has remained almost continuously at 1 satoshi per virtual byte for the past three months, a technical minimum that most nodes will relay under any circumstances. We evaluated 1,105 data points from June 9, 2026 to September 9, 2026. During this period, the rate never exceeded 7 Satoshi per virtual byte.



What are the actual network costs (sat/vB)?

The network fee for Bitcoin transactions does not depend on the amount you send, but on the space your transaction occupies in the block. This space is measured in virtual bytes (vB). A block holds approximately one million virtual bytes. People who bid higher per virtual byte can enter the block faster.

fee rate Is the price you pay per virtual byte, in Satoshi per virtual byte (sat/vB). 1 Satoshi is 1/100 million of 1 Bitcoin. According to data measured by the CoinGecko public price interface at 18:51 UTC on September 9, 2026, the price of Bitcoin is US$78,495 or 67,496 euros, at which time the value of 1,000 Satoshi is approximately 67 cents.

The calculation formula can be obtained: Cost = Size × Rate . An ordinary transfer with 1 input address and 2 output addresses (i.e., payee plus change) accounts for approximately 141 virtual bytes in today's common SegWit format. At a rate of 1 sat/vB, the cost is 141 Satoshi, or approximately 0.10 euros. At 2 sat/vB, the cost is 282 Satoshi, or approximately 0.19 euros. The amount sent does not play a role in this process: the cost of sending € 10 is exactly the same as sending € 10,000.



Our measurements: 1,105 data points from a three-month Bitcoin block

For this article, we obtained our own rate data rather than citing other media. The basic data comes from the public interface of the blockchain browser mempool.space. The endpoint is/api/v1/mining/blocks/fee-rates/3m, and is obtained through the HTTP200 status code at 18:53 UTC on September 9, 2026. This endpoint returns the distribution of each data point, which is the fee rate distribution for those transactions that are actually confirmed in the block.

Range: covers 1,105 data points with block heights from 953,003 to 966,255, i.e. from 19:20 UTC on June 9, 2026 to 18:22 UTC on September 9, 2026. We evaluated the median of rates within each data point , because it is more robust than the average: a deal that bids a hundred times more than the normal rate due to urgency distorts the average but has little effect on the median.

Results for the entire period: median was 1sat/vB, mean was 1.36, ranging from 0 to 7. The value of 0 represents data points where more than half of confirmed transactions are below 1 Cong per virtual byte, such as miners including their own or bundled transactions. But this does not mean it is completely free.



Why focus on the median rather than the maximum?

What affects your decisions is the cost of normal trading, not the price the most impatient market participants are willing to pay. During our time window, the maximum reached three digits at some individual points, but only a few transactions were involved at a time. In contrast, the median describes the price paid for the median market, which is the value you can refer to.


Mempool is the queue before the next block: Those who bid higher per virtual byte rank higher.


90% of the data points are at or below 2 sat/vB

The distribution among 1,105 points is much sharper than a simple average would suggest. Out of 648 points (i.e. 58.6%), the median is exactly 1 sat/vB. 2 in 239 points (21.6%) and 0 in 112 points (10.1%). A total of 999 data points, or 90.4%, do not exceed 2 sat/vB.

After exceeding this value, the air quickly thinned: 3 sat/vB appeared at 62 points (5.6%), 4 sat/vB appeared at 32 points (2.9%), 5 sat/vB appeared at 7 points, 6 sat/vB appeared at 3 points, and 7 sat/vB appeared at 2 points. No data point reaches 10 sat/vB. The recent past also does not show a different picture: over the past 30 days (361 points), the median was 1 and the maximum was 6; over the past 7 days (85 points), the median was 1 and the maximum was 4.

There is a noteworthy pattern that can be put into practice. Sorted by time of day, the median of 21 out of 24 hours was 1 sat/vB. It rises to 2 only during hours around 15:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00, and 20:00 UTC. This is the period where U.S. trading hours overlap with the end of European working days. However, on a weekday basis, no differences were found: it remained at 1 sat/vB from Monday to Sunday. As a result, anyone with flexibility would send in the morning rather than in the evening, and the difference in euros was just a few cents.



What is UTXO and why do many small amounts of money become expensive later?

Your wallet shows you the balance. But on the blockchain, the balance does not exist. Separate, independent amounts are stored there, each amount bound to an address. Each of these amounts is called UTXO(short for Unspent Transaction Output). The amount shown in your wallet is the sum of your UTXOs.

This is where cost calculations become personalized. Every UTXO you spend on a transaction becomes input and takes up space. A SegWit input accounts for approximately 68 virtual bytes. If you withdraw small savings plan amounts into your wallet every week for two years, there will be about a hundred such amounts there. If many of these amounts are to be spent one day at a time, just entering the amount itself will multiply the cost.

Consolidation is the answer: You send yourself a lot of small UTXOs in a single transaction in return for a large UTXO. Throughout the process, the amount remains in your own custody, for example in a hardware wallet. What changes is only the form of your holdings on the blockchain.



How to calculate the cost of a merger yourself

The formula is short enough to keep in mind. For transactions using today's common SegWit addresses, the approximate formula is as follows:

vBsize = 11 + (number of inputs × 68.5) + (number of outputs × 31)

An example with 20 inputs and 1 output requires approximately 1,412 virtual bytes. At 1 sat/vB, the cost of the merger was 1,412 Satoshi, or approximately 0.95 euros. 5 inputs to 1 output give 384vB, so it's 384Satoshi or about 0.26 euros.

Comparisons with more expensive environments become interesting. In our three-month window, the highest median was 7 sat/vB. The same combination of 20 inputs would have cost 9,884 Satoshi or about 6.67 euros at the time, or more than seven times better. If the rate climbs to 50 sat/vB at some point (a value that is not included in our measurement window, so we explicitly use it as an arithmetic example rather than a prediction), it will be 70,600 Satoshi or about 47.65 euros.

However, the real savings occur later, when you finally spend that amount of trade. If you subsequently spend 20 separate UTXOs instead of 1, you will carry an additional 19 inputs. At 7 sat/vB, these costs are 9,110 Satoons or about 6.15 euros, and in the 50 rate example they are 65,075 Satoons or about 43.92 euros. This calculation works in your favor precisely when you place the merger in the low-rate stage.


The size of a transaction can be calculated in advance: Inputs and outputs determine the price, not the amount.

Full memory pool, low rates: This is not a contradiction

A glance at the memory pool (the unconfirmed transaction queue) can be confusing at first. At 18:52 UTC on September 9, 2026, it held 81,263 unconfirmed transactions, totaling 41.5 million virtual bytes. Arithmetic, this corresponds to more than 40 complete blocks, or approximately seven hours of network work.

However, what matters is what the queue is bidding for. Of the 41.5 million virtual bytes, only 0.92 million paid at least 1 sat/vB, and only 0.42 million paid at least 2 sat/vB. The rest is below this level, waiting for miners with free space. For you, this means that there is less competition for the next block than an entire block, and transactions with a rate of 2 sat/vB are actually at the top of the list.

Rate recommendations from the same source confirmed this at the same minute. The recommended rate for the next confirmation is 2 sat/vB, and the half-hour, one-hour and economy settings are 1 sat/vB. However, people sending at 1sat/vB need to be patient: with about 0.9 blocks competing at the same level, several blocks may be needed, and a sudden jump in demand can push back your own transactions.



When is a merger a bad idea?

Cheaper does not automatically mean wisdom. There are three reasons why you can oppose doing this, and you should understand them before building a transaction.

  • Privacy: When you merge multiple UTXOs in a single transaction, you publicly show that the amounts belong to the same person. For anyone analyzing blockchain, previously undocumented links will be generated. People who deliberately separate amounts from different sources will abandon the separation through consolidation.
  • Tax treatment: According to current administrative views, transfers between your own two wallets are not considered disposal and the holding period continues to run. Even so, you must keep a clean record of the process so that your tax software allocates the amount correctly later. For large holdings, this is not a substitute for tax advice.
  • Disproportionate efforts: People with three UTXOs saved a few cents by combining, but risked operating errors. Benefits grow as the amount increases, and below about ten inputs, this is rarely worth it.

What applies when your coins are deposited on an exchange

If your holdings are deposited on an exchange, you don't have your own UTXOs at all because custody is with the provider. There, you pay a fixed withdrawal fee when you transfer out, which is loosely related to actual network fees. We measured across 475 assets on August 17, 2026:

For Bitcoin, the exchange charges eight to sixteen times the transaction cost in the same minute . At a rate of 1 sat/vB, this mark-up is heavier than ever. Therefore, it is necessary to check the provider's rate page before each withdrawal, and anyone who uses multiple cryptocurrency exchanges will find significant differences there.



Setting rates in wallets: What to check before sending

Almost all wallets allow manual setting of rates, often hidden behind the Advanced Settings button. There are four key points here.

  1. First: Check current rates at an independent source before accepting wallet recommendations. Some wallets add a security mark-up to their calculations, which may be several times the amount required at a rate of 1 sat/vB. The chunk browser mempool.space displays current suggestions without logging in.
  2. Second: Notice whether your wallet expresses the rate as a sat/vB ratio or an absolute amount. Only ratios are comparable. The technical basis, that is, how to calculate the weights and sizes of transactions, is recorded on the transaction fees page of Bitcoin wiki.
  3. Third: Check if your wallet provides a "replace-by-fee" feature. It lets you replace a transaction that is set too low with a transaction that later carries a higher fee, rather than letting it hang up indefinitely. People sending at 1sat/vB should enable this option.
  4. Fourth: Check the merged target address very carefully. You send it to yourself, so spelling mistakes won't be discovered by angry recipients. Anyone who uses white list on exchanges already knows this principle.

Limitations of this analysis: What is not shown in the data

Measurements are based on a single data source, the public chunk browser mempool.space. Each point combines several blocks, so our 1,105 points cover 13,253 blocks, but we did not parse them individually. We did not cross-check the second independent source during this period.

Moreover, what cannot be deduced is how much individual users actually paid: these values describe confirmed transactions across the network, not specific German users. Estimates of transaction sizes are also approximations of today's common SegWit formats; anyone who still uses the old address format will end up with larger transactions, incurring higher fees. Finally, all these numbers are snapshots as of September 9, 2026. High-demand periods can double rates several times in a matter of hours.



Checking Bitcoin Network Fees: Summary of Points

Check how many UTXOs your wallet holds. Most wallets display this information in coin selection or advanced settings. Starting with about ten separate amounts, it's worth doing the combined arithmetic, and at a rate of 1 sat/vB, even with twenty inputs, the operating cost is less than one euro. Check current rates before sending. Before accepting suggestions, compare your wallet suggestions to the blockchain browser. If there is no urgent matter, place transactions in the morning rather than in the evening: between our measurement of 15:00 and 20:00 UTC, the median is twice as high.

Compare exchange withdrawal fees with actual network fees. Even if network costs are almost zero, the fixed withdrawal fee remains the same. People who frequently withdraw cash should juxtapose the terms of various cryptocurrency exchanges and bundle withdrawals, rather than moving each small amount of money individually.
