Coinbase Wallet brand returns, Base App shifts to trading functions
Coinbase Wallet officially restores its status as a product name, marking an adjustment to the "Base App" rebranding strategy launched in July 2025. This change reflects the company's greater focus on transaction functions across multiple blockchain networks.
Core features and network support
The new Coinbase Wallet is designed to provide an extremely fast experience that allows users to trade any asset anywhere without permission. In addition to the original Base network, Robinhood Chain and Monad have also joined the list of supported networks. Currently, the ecosystem networks supported by the wallet include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche.
In terms of trading functions, users can use innovative products such as perpetual contracts, tokenized stocks, and forecast markets provided by Hyperliquid. These functions may be limited due to regional regulations. Although Coinbase emphasizes a fast onboarding process and unauthenticated access, some features still have geographical area limitations.
Self-custody and asset management
Coinbase Wallet continues to adhere to the self-custody model, allowing users to fully control their own private keys, encrypted assets and data. As Coinbase's official website states, the wallet gives users absolute sovereignty over their own cryptocurrency assets.
Product leader Ryan Kass described the app as a "test kitchen" for new assets and financial products. For newly issued assets, the system is open for access by default; at the same time, the detection system will automatically block tokens identified as malicious. New market categories require independent product compliance reviews before going online.
Strategic adjustment: From social experimentation to focus on transactions
Early Base Apps tried to combine transactions, Social networks, mini apps, instant messaging and payment functions. However, Brian Armstrong later admitted that his social experiments did not achieve the expected results. As social capabilities weakened, Jesse Pollak turned his attention back to blockchain technology itself and handed over application leadership to Jordan "Cobie" Fish, pushing applications towards a non-pure Base focus.
Despite the name change, the Base network has not disappeared. Kass said popular Base assets will still be displayed along with assets from other supporting networks. Currently, Coinbase has not disclosed specific fee details, nor has it said whether this shift in transaction orientation has led to an increase in the number of users.
