Bitcoin rose strongly to US$87,000
Bitcoin rose strongly, reaching as high as US$87,000. In the past week, BTC has rebounded from around $75,000 to its highest level since January. This rapid rise led to the liquidation of more than $1 billion in positions in the derivatives market, of which about $900 million were short positions.
According to CoinGlass, this volatility forced more than 139,000 investors to forcibly liquidate their positions. The massive liquidation of short positions helped Bitcoin break through resistance levels in a short period of time and provide additional momentum for price increases.
Most of the US$1 billion liquidations are short positions
Bitcoin's sharp rise has caught leveraged investors who expected prices to continue to fall by surprise. According to CoinGlass, approximately US$1 billion of positions were liquidated in the cryptocurrency derivatives market, of which US$900 million came from short positions, and the number of investors affected exceeded 139,000.
The single largest liquidation occurred on the Hyperliquid platform, with a nominal value of just over US$20 million.
A short position is the type of trade opened by a trader in anticipation of a decline in prices. As prices rise, these positions start to generate losses. Once the margin is insufficient, the exchange will automatically close the position.
During periods of rapid Bitcoin gains, the closing of a large number of short positions may trigger new buying behavior. This process, known as "Short Squeeze", forces the liquidation of short positions as prices rise, accelerating price upward.

Why did Bitcoin rise to US$87,000?
Bitcoin fell back to about US$75,000 last week, and then rebounded strongly. After the price exceeded $80,000, the rally extended to $87,000. With the development of this market, the total market value of Bitcoin is close to US$1.8 trillion, and BTC has also reached its highest point since January.
Short clearing plays an important role in driving prices up. Prices broke through resistance one after another, prompting investors holding short positions to close their positions to limit losses. These operations have increased buying pressure on the market and may further accelerate the pace of increase.
However, liquidation data does not indicate that this is the only reason for the price increase. A clearer picture shows that the strong price movement has also cleared a large number of leveraged positions from the market.
Why is $88,000 so important to Bitcoin?
After this round of gains, the market focus shifted to the US$88,000 level.
Analyst Doctor Profit quoted by CryptoPotato believes that Bitcoin's return to its 50-cycle moving average at the last week-level level is an important technical development. He pointed out that this moving average is around $78,700, and if Bitcoin can regain this position, it will further support the bullish structure.
Doctor Profit listed $88,000 as the next key level to focus on. In addition, some technical analysis points to significant selling areas around $88,000. As a result, price responses at critical levels will determine whether the current rally can be sustained.
Can Bitcoin hit US$90,000?
