Defense Secretary Hegseth discloses 2025 Bitcoin capital gains
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disclosed in his annual financial report that his Bitcoin holdings in Coinbase generated capital gains of $2,702 to $6,000 in 2025.
Bitcoin Positions and Trading Details
This annual disclosure document certified by the Office of Government Ethics on September 18 shows that Hegese has two separate Bitcoin positions in a Coinbase wallet. The first position was worth between US$15,001 and US$50,000, recording capital gains of US$2,501 to US$5,000; the second position was worth between US$1,001 and US$15,000, resulting in gains of US$201 to US$1,000.
Taken together, Hegese's total Bitcoin valuation is approximately between US$16,000 and US$65,000. The table breaks down positions by value range, but does not indicate specific trading dates or precise amounts. For transactions above US$1,000, Part 7 of the report provides further details, but since only sales transactions worth more than US$1,000 need to be listed separately, this section does not list any Bitcoin transactions, and transactions below this threshold will not appear in the broken list.
Based on the reported position breakdown, Hagesese's Bitcoin valuation ranges from $16,000 to $65,000, with a 2025 earnings range of $2,702 to $6,000. Hagesese completed and signed the financial report on May 14. The Department of Defense's Office of Ethics approved the disclosure in August, and the government completed final certification in September.
Stock holdings and sales after taking office
disclosure forms cover investment activities other than cryptocurrencies. A few weeks after taking office, Hegsese sold shares in Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Honeywell, each worth between $1,001 and $15,000. On Feb. 7, he also sold holdings in KKR and Blackstone, both of which were valued at $15,001 to $50,000.
A further reduction occurred on March 24, when Hagesese sold shares in major technology companies such as Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle. His largest single acquisition was in index funds, in which SPY and QQQ each invested US$100,001 to US$250,000 (bought on February 24).
The report also noted that he held more than US$1 million in a single U.S. bank account, underscoring the large size of his traditional financial assets and the coexistence of his digital assets.
Mortgage, Interest Rates and Property Details
