Bitcoin Position Ranking: Mysterious Giant Whale and Government Secrets
If Bitcoin had a position ranking, the top position would belong to a person whose true identity is still a mystery. New research from Arkham Intelligence reveals the actual holders of the world's largest cryptocurrency. The list includes giant exchanges, Wall Street funds, government entities and several mysterious wallet addresses. Arkham Intelligence is an agency that specializes in tracking crypto-wallets and identifying their owners.
Top of the list: Satoshi Nakamoto's unmoved coins
Top of the list is Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious founder of Bitcoin, who holds approximately 1.096 million BTC in his account, worth approximately US$92 billion. These coins were first mined in 2009 when Bitcoin was first discovered and still rank first among all holders.
Heavyweight players: Exchange and corporate giant
Coinbase ranks second with 969,000 BTC assets, which include both the company's own and customer custody. Strategy, a bitcoin acquisition company led by Michael Saylor, followed closely, ranking third with 848,000 BTC. BlackRock holds 799,000 BTC with its ETF, while Binance ranks among the top five with 714,000 BTC.
Historical review: The investment miracle of 2017
Looking back at the time when Trump was first sworn in on January 20, 2017, according to CoinMarketCap data, the trading price of Bitcoin was approximately US$895. It was a month full of variables: Bitcoin broke through $1,190 on January 5, but then fell below $760 within a week, a drop of about 36%.
- The amount that $1,000 could buy at the time: About 1.12 bitcoins.
- Current value: As the price of Bitcoin approaches US$85,600, the value of these 1.12 bitcoins is approximately US$95,600.
- Profit: was approximately US$94,600, an increase of more than 9,400%.
The largest single wallet?
The largest single "fat cat" wallet is Binan's cold wallet, an offline vault that stores nearly 250,000 bitcoins. Binance is the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume and an online marketplace that allows people to buy, sell and store cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.
Governments that have not purchased
The U.S. government is the largest national holder, with 325,000 BTC units, but these are not obtained through purchase. Most of it was confiscated from criminals and involved in the Bitfinex hacking incident, the Silk Road case, and more recently the LuBian hacking case. The UK came second with 61,000 BTC coins recovered from a criminal case in 2018.
El Salvador is different. It is one of the few countries that deliberately purchases Bitcoin as a national policy.
Hidden Secrets: The Story Behind Strategy
The supply limit of bitcoins is 21 million, so the actual supply in circulation is much smaller than what the headline numbers imply. This scarcity is an important reason why some bulls, such as Cathie Wood, believe prices will rise significantly. Wood is the founder and CEO of ARK Invest, a U.S. investment firm known for making large-scale bets on disruptive technologies such as Tesla, artificial intelligence and Bitcoin.
