Featherlend opens two isolated Morpho lending markets for BRZ stablecoins on Polygon
Featherlend has opened two isolated Morpho lending markets on the Polygon network for BRZ (the Brazilian real stablecoin issued by Transfero), providing corporate coffers with a structured chain path to Brazil's benchmark interest rate of 13.75% Selic. Transfero announced the launch on October 2.
Dual Market and Dual Mortgage Path
Both markets use BRZ as the only loan asset, so the interest rate earned by the lender is paid by the borrower in the real. The difference between the two lies in the type of collateral:
- TESOURO Market : Accepts tokenized short-term Brazilian government bonds issued by Etherfuse. This is a currency-matched ledger, with both amounts denominated in Reals.
- sfrxUSD Market : Accepts Frax's income dollar tokens. This allows companies to retain their U.S. dollar cash positions while withdrawing reals to pay wages or supplier payments without having to engage in spot foreign exchange transactions.
Featherlend is responsible for orchestrating both markets, setting clearing thresholds and monitoring solvency, while Morpho provides immutable isolated market contracts. Since 2019, BRZ has maintained a 1:1 pegged to the real through a controlled casting and destruction mechanism and is currently operational on more than 16 networks.
Why did Brazilian interest rates not enter the chain before?
Brazil has one of the highest policy interest rates among major economies. According to Transfero, prior to this release, no interest rate could have directly entered the wallet of holding the real. Companies that hold BRZ face limited options: either leave clearing floating funds idle and allow inflation to erode their value, or convert them into U.S. dollars and lose needed currency exposure. Foreign companies often rely on non-deliverable forward contracts (NDF) to raise the real, which require counterparties, margins and offshore banking relationships. In addition, central bank regulations add complexity because Resolution 521, which has been in effect since February, treats transfers of dollar-pegged stablecoins as foreign exchange operations.
This release extends to the Brazilian market the same DeFi lending infrastructure that Morpho has promoted in its Asian expansion.
How the market prices Brazil risk
Featherlend reported that at the launch of the market, collateral yields were close to 12.67%, and borrowing rates were close to 8.76%. The Merkl incentive activity pays an incentive equivalent to 100% of the CDI Interbank Offered Rate on idle BRZ balances.
Lenders do not need to worry about liquidation, but bear risks to the quality of the collateral and may face withdrawal restrictions when utilization is high. sfrxUSD partially introduces exchange rate risk, as a stronger real makes dollar-backed borrowers more prone to liquidation.
This is the latest step in Polygon's efforts to promote the connection of traditional finance with on-chain tracks, complementing its crypto checkouts and payment stacks.
