XRP and Gold: Comparison of Ten-Year Investment Returns of Thousands of Dollars
XRP has been one of the cryptocurrencies that have attracted much attention in the past decade or so. As a digital asset launched by Ripple, XRP is designed to help banks and companies send funds around the world quickly and cheaply.
Gold has been used as a store of value for thousands of years. If we had invested US$1,000 each to buy XRP and gold separately, how would the two perform? Let's review historical data.
Early stages of trading
The XRP Ledger was created in 2012, but daily price data on CoinMarketCap began in August 2013. At the time, the unit price of XRP was approximately $0.0058. If you invest US$1,000, you can buy approximately 172,400 XRPs.
Meanwhile, in early August 2013, the price of gold was around US$1,300 per ounce. The same $1,000 could buy about 0.77 ounces of gold.
Today's Value Assessment
Based on the latest data, XRP is currently trading at approximately US$1.50. This means that the 172,400 XRPs purchased in 2013 are now worth approximately US$258,000, an increase of nearly 26,000%.
Gold performed equally strongly. Based on the current price of about US$4,190 per ounce, the total value of that 0.77 ounce of gold is now about US$3,200, an increase of about 220%.
In other words, over the same time span, XRP converted US$1,000 into approximately 80 times more wealth than gold.
The road to volatility is not smooth
XRP's market trend is far from smooth sailing. It hit an all-time high of $3.84 on January 4, 2018. At that point in time, the value of these positions was as high as approximately $662,000. However, XRP prices are now down about 60% from that peak and have fallen more than 47% in the past year.
Gold has also experienced its own fluctuations. It reached a record high of approximately US$5,608 per ounce in January 2026, when 0.77 ounces of gold were worth approximately US$4,300. Since then, gold prices have retreated back by about 25%.
Enlightenment behind the data
XRP brought investment returns much higher than gold, but was accompanied by a more drastic decline. Investors need to go through multiple market crashes, including years when XRP is long below its 2018 peak. In contrast, gold has grown more slowly, but has retreated less.
It should be noted that past performance does not guarantee future results.
