David Schwartz proposes XRPL proactive trading repair solution

David Schwartz, chief technology officer emeritus of Ripple, proposed a new proposal: eliminate rushing and sandwich attacks on XRP ledgers through a \"transaction reservation\" system

What is a sandwich attack? Why is it worth paying attention?

Preemptive trading and sandwich attacks are well-known problems in decentralized exchanges. In sandwich attacks, malicious traders use transactions initiated by users on decentralized exchanges and place orders before and after the user\'s transaction, creating a \"pincer attack\" effect. As a result, the victim\'s trade is executed at a worse price, while the attacker earns the difference.

XRP ledgers \'automated market makers and decentralized exchanges have adopted a pseudo-random transaction sequencing mechanism, which greatly reduces the risk of pre-emptive trading. While this doesn\'t make it completely immune-sandwich attacks still pose a threat-it\'s a powerful defense boost that reduces price slips.

David Schwartz\'s new proposal appears to be designed to fill this remaining gap.

Proactive repair, not crisis response

Schwartz made it clear that this is not a \"fire alarm\" moment. Based on the original article, he said he was \"not particularly concerned\" about the current risk level of the XRP ledger and positioned the proposal as a clean proactive solution rather than an emergency response to existing threats.

The transaction reservation mechanism will allow users to lock execution slots before competitors \'transactions intervene, directly resolving sequencing vulnerabilities that make pre-emptive transactions possible. By reserving a place in the trading queue in advance, traders will be protected from robots that monitor pending activity and attempt to jump in line.

Schwartz co-designed the XRP ledger in 2011 and has since served as chief technology officer of Ripple Corporation, going through all legal and product phases. He retired from daily operations at the end of 2025 and became an honorary retiree of chief technology officer and a member of the board of directors.

Traders and developers still peruse every piece of Schwartz\'s article carefully because no one else within Ripple can speak in public with both technical authority and blunt views.

The proposal comes as XRP Ledger continues to expand its influence in the DeFi space. A native lending protocol is being phased out under the XLS-66 standard as part of XRP ledger version 3.0.0 that supports fixed-term institutional loans with a separate vault and automatic repayment capabilities.

As XRP ledgers attract more liquidity and more complex financial activities, it becomes increasingly important to strengthen their decentralized exchanges to withstand predatory trading strategies.

No formal amendment or implementation timetable has been announced. As with all XRP ledger protocol changes, any adoption requires the consent of a super majority of verifiers before it can be launched on the main network.
