International Monetary Fund Economist: Tokenization marks a new stage in global finance
Itai Agur, senior economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), pointed out that tokenization represents a new stage in global finance. Agur emphasized the transformative potential of programmable currencies and digital assets, believing that these innovations can reduce unnecessary intermediaries, simplify transaction processes, and make them faster, cheaper and more efficient.
The role of tokenization in the financial system
Agur emphasized that tokenization is far more than just the digitization of money. He explained that the technology can convert real-world assets such as stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities and bank deposits into blockchain-based tokens, making the transfer of these assets safer and faster than ever before.
Itai Agul described tokenization as the next evolution of financial markets and emphasized that programmable currencies and digital assets can accelerate transactions and reduce costs. With programmability, transactions can be completed automatically when predetermined conditions are met. This helps reduce delays, reduces counterparty risk, and cuts management costs. For example, in real estate sales, settlement can be completed immediately once ownership is verified.
The same underlying mechanism can also enable partial ownership, round-the-clock trading, deeper liquidity, and a wider range of investment opportunities. These advantages are driving the increasing integration between traditional finance and blockchain-based infrastructure.
Key developments in XRP ledgers
In this context, XRP ledgers (XRPL) have attracted more and more attention in the discussion of tokenized finance. The network stands out for its infrastructure specifically designed for rapid value transfer, capable of completing transactions in seconds and at extremely low costs. These characteristics are particularly prominent in financial environments that require the settlement of large amounts of tokenized assets in near-real time.
In addition to payment functions, the XRP ledger also has built-in support for digital asset issuance and management. This framework allows institutions to issue and manage stablecoins, bonds, and other real-world assets as tokens-often without the need for complex smart contracts-to meet the needs of multiple standard use cases.
(Glossary: RWA refers to real-world assets, that is, real assets digitized on the blockchain. XRPL refers to XRP ledger, a blockchain network used for asset transfers and digital asset issuance.)
Although the IMF does not explicitly mention the XRP ledger, Agul\'s vision for programmable currencies is highly consistent with the long-term development of the XRP ledger.
Institutional Adoption and Recent Updates
Recent support for upgrades to decentralized identities, automated market makers, token custody, and enterprise-level tokenization tools has enhanced the appeal of XRP ledgers to institutional users.
Ripple, the organization behind the XRP ledger, has made tokenization of real-world assets a priority of its long-term strategy, focusing on building issuance, custody and settlement infrastructure for banks and financial institutions.
A proposal recently submitted to the British Parliament listed the XRP ledger as a potential platform for climate bond tokenization. In addition, there are reports that the network\'s RLUSD supply in circulation has exceeded that of Ethereum. These developments reflect the continued expansion of the Ripple ecosystem in the digital asset space.
As governments, central banks, and financial institutions increasingly turn to tokenized finance, networks with speed, low cost, interoperability, and compliant asset issuance capabilities are expected to become critical infrastructure. In this landscape, XRP ledgers stand out as the leading platform for the tokenized economy.
