Mitsubishi UFJ's blockchain bond test: part of Japan's larger layout

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group announced the launch of a blockchain settlement test for Japanese government bond repurchase transactions

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group announced on August 13 that it will test the settlement of Japanese government bond repurchase transactions on the blockchain. The test uses Digital Assets Corporation's Canton network to synchronize bonds and funds in real time transactions, replacing the 1 to 3-day settlement window currently used by market participants.

The four Mitsubishi UFJ group entities participating in the test include: Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Bank and the parent company group. Digital Assets provides Canton infrastructure, while Progmat, which manages approximately 452 billion yen in publicly issued securities tokens, handles market practice and product design. Secured Finance AG is building a smart contract layer to automate the repurchase life cycle, including interest rate setting, maturity tracking and collateral management.

These transactions remain in Japan's existing book-based transfer registration system-which records legal ownership. What migrated to the Canton network is settlement instructions: blockchain synchronizes the registration system with digital payment terminals (tokenized bank deposits or stablecoins), allowing bonds and funds to be delivered at the same time. Mitsubishi UFJ said in an announcement: "Given the high creditworthiness and liquidity of Japanese government bonds, they are widely used as collateral for repo transactions by domestic and foreign market participants, and the momentum to bring this asset into the chain is increasing." The test was selected for the Japan Financial Services Agency's "Payment Innovation Project" in February this year-a pilot program for new payment infrastructure.

Another path to the same network

Mitsubishi UFJ's independent testing is not the only way it enters the market. Since May, Mitsubishi UFJ has also joined another working group of seven institutions, including: Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, State Street Trust Bank, SBI Securities, Japan Exchange Group, BlackRock Japan. The working group pursues a similar goal: tokenize Japanese government bond collateral and pair it with stablecoin funds to achieve full-chain repo transactions and further promote the expansion of Canton Network into Japan's institutional financial market. The working group is targeting the same market-Japan's 250 trillion yen to 270 trillion yen Japanese government bond repurchase market, and its comprehensive report is expected to be released in October.

Zenith, a blockchain infrastructure provider who joined the working group in June, said it is building an Ethereum-compatible execution layer for Canton to support related work. Mitsubishi UFJ's own suppliers and working group suppliers are converging into the same underlying network through two different technology routes.

a track that did not touch Canton

A third Japanese institution is studying adjacent links to the same problem, but based on available evidence, it does not involve the Canton network at all. The Bank of Japan said on March 3 that it would test blockchain settlement of reserves held by banks at the central bank, a step linked to a wholesale digital yen decision expected later this year. This is an issue with the central bank's payment system, not a bond settlement issue, and there is no mention of Canton or Mitsubishi UFJ's tests or working groups in the public records.

Mitsubishi UFJ's blockchain layout goes hand in hand

This was not an isolated operation by Mitsubishi UFJ. Since the establishment of the digital asset service department in October 2025, the bank has issued announcements related to blockchain or tokenization approximately every two to three months:

December 2025: Announcement of tokenized investment trust infrastructure cooperation
February 2026: Selected into the payment innovation project of the Financial Services Agency of Japan
March 2026: Completed its own Realty Token security token
May 2026: Working Group on Tokenized Japanese Government Bond Chain Repurchase was established
June 2026: Jointly launched a real-time three-party stablecoin with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mizuho Bank to promote the development of Japanese stablecoin payments
August 2026: Announcement of settlement testing on the Japanese government bond repurchase chain

Whether Japanese institutions are converging on the same settlement infrastructure rather than building parallel and potentially repetitive paths will depend on the report released by the working group in October and whether Mitsubishi UFJ will incorporate its independent testing into the work of the working group or continue to operate independently. At the same time, the development comes as more international financial and payment institutions join the Canton Network, highlighting the network's growing influence in global institutional financial markets.
