Quantum threats resurface: Cryptocurrency security faces new tests

Recently, the rapid advancement of quantum computing technology has made "quantum threats" once again the focus of security attention for cryptocurrencies (especially Bitcoin). Since quantum computers with sufficient computing power may crack the current encryption system of cryptocurrencies, the market has become concerned about the long-term security of digital assets. Therefore, the transition to anti-quantum technology and preparing existing networks to prevent quantum attacks have become increasingly important issues in the field of cryptocurrency.

IonQ launches a 256 qubit computer: How far is it to break Bitcoin?

In this context, the American quantum computing company IonQ introduced its "Superior 256" quantum computer equipped with a 256 qubit processor in its latest report. However, the company made it clear that the current level of Superior 256 is not enough to endanger Bitcoin's security in an instant.

According to IonQ's research data, 19,397 physical qubits are needed to crack the secp256k1 elliptic curve encryption algorithm used by Bitcoin. In this case, a fault-tolerant quantum computer with approximately 19,397 physical qubits would take approximately 25.7 days to crack the encryption curve.

Research points out that to transform a quantum attack into actual Bitcoin asset theft, not only requires a very high number of qubits, but also a quantum computer with error correction capabilities and can operate stably for a long time. Therefore, the fact that Superior 256 only has 256 physical qubits does not mean that Bitcoin's 256-bit cryptography can be easily breached. According to IonQ calculations, implementing such attacks requires a larger, fault-tolerant system, or approximately 19,397 physical qubits.

IonQ emphasized that this study is not an actual attack on Bitcoin. The company said it did not access any Bitcoin wallets, private keys, networks or real-time systems during the research, and there are currently no fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of performing such attacks.

In addition, IonQ recently announced that it has begun accepting orders for the Superior 256 and plans to begin delivery next year.
