The Algorand Foundation appoints William Herkelrath as new CEO, leading a new chapter in institutional and post-quantum security
Algorand Foundation U.S. Inc. It was announced on September 9 that William Herkelrath had been officially appointed CEO of Algorand, replacing the outgoing Staci Warden. Warden retired honorably after nearly five years of leading the Layer-1 network. Herkelrath will officially perform his duties from August 31. The personnel change comes as Algorand further focuses on institutional-level adoption and post-quantum elasticity capabilities.
From Chainlink, Curv to the core: Deep industry heritage
Herkelrath has about 20 years of rich experience, covering artificial intelligence, enterprise software, institutional finance, and blockchain infrastructure. He recently co-founded K3 Labs, an artificial intelligence-centered automation platform designed to build and run workflows managed by AI agents. Prior to this, he held executive positions at Chainlink and Curv.
"I joined Algorand because of its leadership in decentralized quantum cryptography," Herkelrath said."As artificial intelligence and quantum computing threats approach, Algorand has a unique opportunity to become a partner in providing verifiable and trustworthy security solutions to a variety of institutions."
Board reorganization and post-betting on quantum technology
Along with the leadership change, Algorand also announced changes to the board of directors. Herkelrath and Alex Fowler, chief strategy officer of Nexus Laboratories, will join the board, while Rebecca Rettig and Michael Mosier will withdraw from the board.
The appointment coincides with a paper published by Google's Quantum Artificial Intelligence (Quantum AI) team that cited Algorand more than 30 times and recognized him as a key innovator. Currently, Algorand's post-quantum account has been officially launched, and the network is the first to adopt verifiable random functions (VRF) based on a large set of temporary verifiers, further consolidating its technical advantages.
Broader institutional advancement strategy
Warden sees the transfer of power as a milestone in the foundation's work, demonstrating the value public blockchain can bring to real-world finance. "It has been a great honor in my career to lead the Algorand Foundation," Warden said."William has the vision and experience to lead Algorand to open a new chapter."
This adjustment retains Algorand's existing core management team and continues to deepen its layout in the institutional finance sector. Previously, Algorand has partnered with Microsoft and CDP Venture Capital Fund's Frontech Accelerator to position itself as the cornerstone of next-generation digital assets and cybersecurity.
Currently, Algorand's ecosystem includes start-ups, developers, government agencies, and global partners working together to build practical tools that serve real-world finance and digital assets. The foundation expects that under the leadership of new leadership, this ecological foundation will further expand and grow.
