Coinbase abandons the name of the Base App and renamed the wallet to Coinbase Wallet

Coinbase Wallet ends its "Base App" brand experiment and officially restores its original name

After 14 months of rebranding the "Base App", Coinbase's experiment has officially ended. On September 10, 2026, the official account of @coinbasewallet confirmed that the app will restore its original name-Coinbase Wallet.

This name change will not affect the safety of users 'funds. Users only need to update existing apps on iOS or Android devices to complete the switch.

Transformation from social experiments to trading platforms

In July 2025, when Coinbase renamed its wallet to Base App, its ambition was obvious: it aimed to create a "super application" in the encryption field that integrates transactions, USDC-based payments, social interactions through the Farcaster protocol, and mini application ecosystems into a single product.

However, social attributes, the core differentiation feature that distinguishes Base App from all other market wallets, have not been favored by users as expected. User feedback ranged from lukewarm to publicly skeptical.

In January 2026, just half a year before re-branding, Base head Jesse Pollak publicly admitted that social strategies had not worked and announced that he would shift his focus to a "transaction-centered" user experience.

Subsequently, in July 2026, there was a change in management. Pollak stepped down from Base's day-to-day leadership role, handing over the role to @cobie (Jordan Fish), better known in cryptosphere. Fish joined Coinbase after Coinbase acquired Echo, its ICO launch platform valued at about $375 million.

This name change triggered an interesting response on the Internet. Earlier on September 10, when asked if Base App supported other chains,@ cobireply replied: "Well, I definitely have to change my name, haha." The response suggests that even for its own leadership, the time for re-branding is too late.

Positioning of a multi-chain trading hub

Coinbase stated that Base App has evolved into a broader multi-chain trading platform, so it is logical to retain the name of Coinbase Wallet while retaining the best parts of Base App.

Currently,@coinbase is positioning the app as the fastest way to trade tokenized stocks, Memecoins, perpetual contracts, and forecast markets.

Ryan Kass, product director at Coinbase Wallet, pointed out that Coinbase Wallet will become a "test kitchen" for products and assets that cannot be made available through Coinbase's centralized exchange.

After this re-branding, Coinbase Wallet supports multiple blockchains such as Base, Robinhood Chain, Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Monad, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche, and plans to continue to expand the scope of support.

In addition, the wallet allows users to access perpetual contracts, forecast markets, and tokenized stocks supported by Hyperliquid. Coinbase emphasized that users always control their own funds and this brand change will not affect existing balances.
