BTC The cryptocurrency tycoon donated £ 72 million to the Reform Party in two days, exceeding the sum of all political parties in the UK last year.
Two cryptocurrency billionaires donated £ 72 million (approximately US$97 million) to the Reform UK led by Nigel Farage in just two days, which exceeds the total fundraising of all political parties in the UK last year.
BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo took the lead. He announced a donation of £ 36 million in the Daily Telegraph, setting a record for the largest single donation in the history of a British political party and more than four times the £ 8 million he has donated this year. To ensure that the government does not restrict large donations, Dellow chose to make a one-time payment rather than a monthly payment. At a monthly rate of 1 million pounds, this funding is enough to support it until 2029, the latest date when the Labour Party may hold elections.
On Saturday, Christopher Harborne, a Tether investor who lives in Thailand, followed suit and donated the same amount. Since the last general election, Habner has donated a total of £ 15 million to the Reform Party. He told the Daily Telegraph that the move was based on a "competitive spirit" and stressed that he "personally expected anything in return from it."
A spokesman for the Reform Party said the funds would be used to hire "the best people to engage in policy research" and assign one campaign manager to each target district, totaling 400. The party is now in "full electoral status."
It is worth noting that recent and previous donations by Dellow and Habnet were not made in the form of cryptocurrency. The UK banned accepting political donations in the form of cryptocurrencies in March this year.
Currently, the government is considering implementing stricter regulatory rules. Although there is no cap on U.K. -based donors, Labour has set a limit of £ 100,000 for British citizens overseas and plans to apply the same standard to recent returnees to settle. Starting from March, any donor who contributes more than £ 100,000 annually must be registered on the voter register for a full 12 months. Derlow, who was born in Sheffield, said he would return to the UK from Hong Kong.
Both people have previously received scrutiny attention. Former U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned Dellow in 2025, after the BitMEX founder had pleaded guilty to exchange anti-money laundering violations three years ago. At the same time, the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is assessing whether Farage should declare a £ 5 million personal gift from Habney.
The Reform Party is currently facing a criminal investigation, although the investigation is not about the donations of the two men. Scotland Yard launched its investigation on Tuesday based on a video broadcast on Channel 4 in which two senior aides discussed ways to circumvent the foreign funding ban and included it in an existing investigation into money received before the last election. "The party denies any wrongdoing and will fully cooperate with the investigation," a spokesman for the Reform Party said.
