CZ views on AI competition, laboratory researchers warn of risk of extinction

Binance founder CZ is involved in the artificial intelligence security debate

On Monday, September 14, Binance founder @cz_binance posted a meaningful post on social media, officially joining the discussion about artificial intelligence (AI) security. "I have never seen a species so eager to fund its own destruction," he wrote. He placed a laughing emoji at the end of the post and did not mention any company or technology by name. The remarks coincided with a week when there was a wave of public warnings within the AI industry.

Researcher resigns, sounding the alarm for alignment leaders

Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old pre-training researcher who previously worked at OpenAI and Anthropic, resigned on September 8, 2026 and posted a post on the X platform saying that both companies are "striving to achieve self-improving super intelligence and risking our lives."

Coxon said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal: "We are moving towards the most radical scenario, and by the end of next year, the situation may be out of control."

Coxon was not the only person within Anthropic to issue an extinction warning. Evan Hubinger, the company's director of artificial intelligence alignment science, also made clear that he believes the probability of such risks occurring exceeds 10%.

Hubinger wrote: "Jacob is right here that we do seriously believe that AI could lead to the demise of all mankind. I personally think that this probability will exceed 10% in the next ten years. I believe Anthropic is doing its best, but we have not yet formulated a plan to solve the super-intelligent alignment problem, and we don't seem to be on the right track at this time."

Later, he clarified that he believed the current model posed low risks, adding: "What I am worried about is the superintelligence generated through recursive self-improvement."

Expert opinions remain widely divided

Given Hubinger's identity, his estimates carry weight, but the broader research community is far from reaching consensus. According to the AI Impacts Expert Survey conducted in 2023 and released in January 2024, among the 2,778 researchers surveyed, the median estimated risk of human extinction caused by AI is 5%. This means that Hubinger's personal opinion is significantly higher than this median.

Prediction that AI may lead to human extinction is not an established scientific fact, and researchers are fiercely divided about the speed at which artificial intelligence will develop and the level of risks such systems may pose.

CZ's own public record on AI issues is much more complex than his sarcastic post suggests. In an X Platform news released on May 29, 2026, he said that AI will exist for a long time and grow exponentially, but due to too many market competitors, most AI companies will go bankrupt.

On September 2, he posted that after a long period of ambiguity with the AI field, speculative capital is flowing back into the cryptocurrency market.

As early as the beginning of 2026, he proposed that AI agents would promote payment transactions far exceeding the number of humans, and all settlements would use cryptocurrency. As a result, his September 14 post was more a comment on the speed of development than an indication that he had joined the "human extinction" camp.
