If voters pass a new billionaire wealth tax proposal in November, Nvidia CEO Huang Renxun may face one of the largest personal tax bills in California history. However, he was unusually relaxed about the matter.
California's Proposition 40 would impose a one-time tax on billionaires living in the state as of January 1, 2026, at 5% of their total assets that exceed the prescribed threshold. According to the state's official voter guide, the tax will expire in 2027, although taxpayers can choose to pay in five years, at additional costs.
Since Huang Renxun's wealth is highly linked to Nvidia shares, estimates earlier this year showed that the tax measure could cost him about US$8 billion. It should be noted that this figure is based on an estimate of his wealth, rather than the actual tax bill that has been assessed and determined.
The rise of Nvidia brings tax risk exposure
Huang Renxun's potential tax liability essentially stems from Nvidia's extraordinary value growth. Recent data shows that Nvidia's market value has climbed to approximately US$5.6 trillion, adding approximately US$1.3 trillion in value in just one year. Most of Huang's personal wealth comes from his stake in Nvidia, which means the wealth tax will capture gains that are mainly in stock appreciation rather than in salary or cash income.

与一些批评该提案的富裕科技高管不同，黄仁勋多次表示，加州的高税负不会驱使他离开。今年早些时候，他表示自己愿意缴纳高额加州税款，并鼓励其他人留在该州。
他的立场之所以引人注目，部分原因在于英伟达本身已成为人工智能投资热潮的最大受益者之一。该公司近期通过收购Hugging Face扩大了业务范围，超越了芯片领域；同时，随着其硬件业务的发展，其在人工智能基础设施融资方面的角色也在不断拓宽。
