OPay has been approved for a secondary listing on the Nigeria Stock Exchange, opening up new channels for local investors
OPay has been authorized by its board of directors and shareholders to list on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NGX). This decision was formally announced in a registration statement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 9, 2026, and aims to provide new investment paths for local investors.
This secondary listing plan follows OPay's upcoming initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and marks an important step in the company's development. OPay said in a statement that the move will allow Nigeria investors to purchase shares directly from local securities markets without having to operate through complex overseas trading platforms.
Positive implications for local investors
This news is exciting for local investors eager to share the dividends of OPay's growth. However, the company has not yet announced a specific time when NGX will go public. It should be emphasized that receiving approval does not mean that OPay shares will immediately begin trading on NGX.
It has been previously reported that OPay achieved a profit of US$90.9 million in six months and submitted an application to list in the United States for this purpose. The layout in Nigeria is not only expected to bring OPay's innovative financial technology services closer to local investors, but will also enrich the content of the local stock market and make it easier for residents to invest in one of the country's most representative technology companies.
From the broader fintech industry perspective, OPay's attempt could pave the way for other large companies seeking to obtain both local and international funding. If successful, it could serve as a model for other financial technology companies considering listing. However, it should be noted that OPay's exploration of this route does not mean that other companies will follow suit, nor does it guarantee that the listing plan will attract significant interest from investors.
Earlier this year, it was reported that OPay had considered a stock market listing in Nigeria, while also exploring the possibility of an initial public offering in the United States. Now, after obtaining approval from the board of directors and shareholders, OPay has officially taken the critical step of a secondary listing on the Nigeria Stock Exchange. Although the U.S. IPO is still underway, the move to a Nigeria listing demonstrates OPay's commitment to growth and provides potential opportunities for future investment.
