Mainnet voting opens: GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 upgrade proposal

TRON DAO has opened mainnet voting on Committee Proposal 107, which will officially activate the GreatVoyage-v4.8.2 upgrade codenamed "Pyrrho". If the proposal is approved, the updated network parameters will take effect at 14:00 on August 28, Singapore time.

This upgrade is marked as a mandatory upgrade, and node operators need to update to v4.8.2 or v4.8.2.1 before 23:59 on August 16, Singapore time to avoid losing synchronization with the network. The governance vote on August 25 followed TRON's established two-step process: software upgrades first, followed by on-chain activation.

TRON's 27 super representatives are selected by TRX holders through a pledge and voting process and are responsible for approving parameter changes to enable new functions.

Core: Ethereum compatibility

The core of this technology change is to align the TRON virtual machine (TVM) with Ethereum's Prague and Osaka upgrade roadmap. Voting involves two specific functions:

The first one is to support historical block hash queries (EIP-2935), which stores up to 8192 historical block hashes in system contracts, providing a longer history for stateless clients and smart contracts that need to reference data on older chains.

The second item is the CLZ (Leading Zero Count) opcode, which is derived from Ethereum's Osaka roadmap. The CLZ instruction returns the number of leading zero bits in a 256-bit value, simplifying manual bit-scanning operations into a single, low-cost step, thereby reducing Gas costs for arithmetic-intensive smart contracts. CLZ is a native instruction to most modern processor architectures, and EVM's chronic lack of this instruction has forced developers to use more costly alternatives to fill the gap.

Aligning TVM with the latest upgrades to Ethereum will help TRON keep pace with the broader EVM ecosystem while providing developers with a clearer cross-chain compatibility path. TRON carries a large amount of stablecoin activity around the world, so such protocol upgrades have important operational implications for wallets, exchanges and indexers that rely on the network.
