Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a technical article explaining how cryptography can one day allow people to vote privately on the chain without having to rely on a trusted group to manage votes or publish results. In a blog post on Monday, Buterin said that a cryptographic approach called \"Indistinguishable Obfuscation\"(iO), combined with blockchain infrastructure, could support private and collusion-resistant voting with \"few assumptions of trust.\" The method would replace threshold committees that jointly decrypt voting data with protected procedures designed only to disclose results.
Butrin pointed out that current online privacy voting still relies on a group of operators to protect information and act honestly. Eliminating this reliance can make decentralized governance more difficult to manipulate, reduce the risk of internal human intervention, and allow voters to participate in voting without revealing how they vote. However, Butrin said the technology is still not practical at present. He mentioned that the most conservative implementations require \"astronomical\" levels of computation, while faster methods rely on insufficiently tested security assumptions, which means that this approach is more long-term research than directly deployable systems.
How indistinguishable confusion protects on-chain voting
According to Butrin, iO is a form of cryptography that transforms software into protected programs. Users can run the program and get the expected output, but cannot check its internal code or extract the data stored in it. Butrin describes the concept as hiding the code itself, rather than the information being processed. For on-chain voting, Buterin said the obfuscated program could include logic to process encrypted ballots and disclose the final count results without exposing the content of individual votes, fundamentally eliminating the need for a threshold committee-whose members jointly hold the key needed to decrypt the results.
Butrin pointed out that blockchain will still play a key role because obfuscated programs cannot prevent themselves from being copied or independently maintain changing information.
Butrin\'s broader privacy push
Buterin previously linked iO to privacy voting in the Ethereum roadmap released in October 2024. He said this approach can provide stronger privacy protection and resistance to coercion. His latest article builds on this, exploring how underlying cryptography is built, the security assumptions needed, and the technical barriers that prevent it from becoming a practical technology. In April 2025, Buterin proposed a more urgent Ethereum privacy roadmap, calling for privacy tools to be integrated into existing wallets. The proposal also calls for greater protection of data collection by infrastructure providers-the providers on which wallets rely when accessing Ethereum. Butrin also allocated funds from his personal assets to fund privacy-protection technologies. On January 30, he designated 16,384 Ethereum (ETH), valued at about $45 million at the time, to support projects focusing on privacy, open infrastructure and autonomy tools.
