Core DAO handles verifier reward vulnerability, emergency hard fork is about to be deployed
Core DAO has taken steps to control verifier reward vulnerabilities that appear on its network. It has been confirmed that affected verifiers will no longer be able to receive block rewards that exceed the preset issuance rate of the agreement. Currently, the project founder is coordinating with the validator to deploy an emergency hard fork to permanently fix the problem. The project characterized the incident as a "forward escalation" rather than a "rollback."
Incident History
Core DAO first disclosed the issue on Monday, describing it at the time as an incident involving a small number of verifiers. Since then, the project party has used stricter terms and has now characterized the relevant verifiers as "malicious actors." The core of the problem is that some validators can claim block rewards that exceed the scope allowed by the agreement's distribution plan.
To understand the seriousness of this matter, it is necessary to first understand the structure mechanism of $CORE rewards. The issuance of the token follows an 81-year plan, with consensus block rewards decreasing by 3.61% annually, creating a predictable, gradual issuance model similar to Bitcoin's halving mechanism, but with a smoother curve. Any validator who receives rewards beyond this plan is a violation of the agreement's basic currency rules.
Core's response measures include confirmation of abnormal reward activities, but the project party has not publicly disclosed the specific technical reasons for the over-issuance. Currently, the total amount of $CORE issued that exceeds the agreement limit has not been announced, and a complete post-event analysis report will also be released in the future.
User Funds Security and Next Steps
Core said that the network is still operating normally and user funds have not been affected. The project party also pointed out that this abnormal incident did not involve fund custody issues. Core is expected to release more updates in the future to further clarify the reasons for the abnormal event, the list of affected validators, and the measures taken to prevent the event from happening again.
Once the emergency hard fork is completed, it is expected to close the vulnerability at the protocol level and prevent similar incidents from happening again. This incident also reminds people of the risks that can arise in the delegated consensus system when a small number of verifiers violate the rules of the agreement.
On the Core blockchain, the verifier is a crucial node, responsible for maintaining the security, decentralization and integrity of the network, performing transaction verification, new block production, and participating in governance through Core's unique "Nakamoto Satoshi Plus" consensus mechanism. The concentration of block production power in a specific set of validators means that any collaborative misconduct within that group can have a significant impact on the integrity of the release.
