Seven major altcoins to avoid in 2026

Analysts warn: Avoid buying these seven cryptocurrencies

As the cryptocurrency market slowly recovers, one analyst warns investors to stay away from several hot crypto assets and areas. In his view, many projects are still trading on old narratives, but their fundamentals are weak and token holders gain limited value. Here are seven altcoins he would not buy.

Cardano (ADA)

Despite Cardano\'s loyal community and long history, the analyst remains bearish. He believes that Cardano\'s biggest problem is the huge gap between its valuation and actual on-chain activities. He pointed out that the Cardano network generates relatively low revenue from decentralized finance (DeFi) activities and applications compared to competitive blockchains. Compared with competitors such as Solana, Cardano lags behind in stablecoin adoption rates, transaction volume and ecological growth. The analyst said the ADA still relies heavily on narrative rather than actual economic use for transactions.

Governance tokens

The second type of governance tokens that need to be avoided is governance tokens. The analyst believes that many governance tokens provide little value to their holders other than voting rights. In most cases, founding teams and venture capital investors still control most governance decisions, limiting the influence of retail investors. In his view, without fee sharing, repurchase or income distribution, these tokens rely purely on speculation rather than fundamentals.

Second-layer network token

Closely related to governance tokens are many layer-2 network tokens. Projects such as Arbitrum and Optimism were specifically mentioned. The analyst pointed out that while the second-layer network itself may have value, its native tokens often fail to capture the value created by the ecosystem. In his view, many second-layer network tokens perform poorly because token holders receive little direct financial benefits.

Dog Coin and Pepe Coin

Memein also entered the list. Although the analyst acknowledged that some traders had made life-changing gains, he warned that the vast majority of memecoins would eventually collapse. Projects like Dogcoin and Pepcoin may survive because of strong community support, but he said most of the newly launched memoin are just short-term speculative tools driven by insiders and social media hype.

Hyperliquid competitors

Category 5 includes Hyperliquid competitors. The analyst believes that Hyperliquid has established a dominant position in the field of decentralized perpetual contract trading with its strong liquidity, high user activity and growing network effects. While newer exchanges may see a short-term rebound, he expects Hyperliquid to remain a long-term winner in the space.

Token issuance with low liquidity, high fully diluted valuation

Another area that analysts shun is low-liquidity, high-fully diluted valuation (FDV) token offerings. Such projects usually only issue a small number of tokens into circulation, while giving the network a very high valuation. According to the analyst, this often creates a situation in which venture capital firms and insiders gradually sell unlocked tokens to retail demand. As more tokens enter circulation, prices tend to come under tremendous pressure.

Litecoin (LTC)

The analyst also believes there is little reason to buy Litecoin. Despite Litecoin\'s long history, he believes the network currently lacks meaningful differentiation and has consistently underperformed Bitcoin in multiple market cycles. He said that as the updated blockchain continues to innovate, the investment logic of Litecoin has been greatly weakened.

Zcash (ZEC)

Finally, the analyst is cautious about Zcash. While acknowledging Zcash\'s early leadership in privacy technology, he believes that large ecosystems like Ethereum and Solana are increasingly integrating privacy capabilities directly into their networks. As a result, independent privacy coins may face increasingly fierce competition in the coming years.
