Ether.fi launches major "summer" upgrades: tokenized stocks, AAVE lending markets and token buybacks
This week, Ether.fi launched the largest upgrade to date for its unmanaged "New Bank" application. The update adds tokenized stocks and precious metals trading, an Aave lending market dedicated to portfolio mortgage lending, and programmatic repurchase of its governance token ETHFI. The agreement is working to become a comprehensive alternative to traditional banks, rather than just a pure DeFi product.
New features for the "Summer" version
The core of this upgrade is a new integration with xStocks, which allows eligible users to trade tokenized stocks and precious metals while holding cryptocurrency. All assets are stored in self-managed vaults with social recovery capabilities rather than centralized exchanges. It should be noted that tokenized stock trading will not be open to the United States and certain other markets at the beginning of the release, which also reflects that the tokenized securities field still faces regulatory differences.
In terms of lending, Ether.fi has deployed a dedicated instance of Aave V4 on Optimism. Users can borrow money with their entire investment portfolio as collateral. The current interest rate is approximately 4%, and the proceeds can be used directly through the Ether.fi Cash card. The company said the new credit backend now has US$22 million in active lending and plans to increase its lending capacity to US$500 million by 2027. Card users can enjoy a cash refund of 3% on their purchases, and more than 30 new legal currency deposit and deposit channels have been added, including Apple Pay and Cash App.
Why it matters
Ether.fi's Cash card business already serves approximately 70,000 card users, which provides the protocol with a significant existing user base, allowing it to migrate users to an expanded platform rather than building banking products from scratch. The integration of transactions, lending and consumption into one unmanaged application also shows that crypto-native infrastructure can compete directly with traditional digital banking not only in terms of yield, but also in terms of convenience.
The upgrade also introduces a new income-linked mechanism for ETHFI holders: the update brings programmatic token repurchases funded by agreement activities, although Ether.fi has not yet announced a fixed repurchase schedule or amount. Combined with lending activity in the dedicated Aave Marketplace, this update allows ETHFI to be more directly linked to platform usage than ever before.
Future Outlook
Whether Ether.fi's move into tokenized stocks and all-portfolio lending can truly gain market acceptance will likely depend on the speed with which regulatory clarity advances in restricted markets, especially the U.S. At the same time, the increase in lending volume and card adoption rates in the new Aave market will be the clearest signal for judging whether the "summer" version can transform existing DeFi users into daily active consumers.
