Berachain has rebranded its stablecoin

HONEY officially changes its name to Bera USD

Berachain has officially relaunched its native stablecoin, previously named $HONEY, and now renamed Bera USD ($BUSD). The underlying smart contract remains unchanged, which means that this rebranding only involves a name change at the technical level. However, its strategic intent is clear: by adopting a name that directly indicates pegging to the dollar, the project is positioning itself more clearly to appeal to institutional users who may be confused about its original name.

$HONEY is a multi-collateralized, crypto-asset-backed stablecoin that is soft-anchored to the U.S. dollar, fully collateralized by a basket of approved dollar-linked stablecoins. It is widely used in Berachain's DeFi ecosystem as a basic trading pair and lending asset. The name change does not change its core functions, only the names seen by institutional participants entering the ecosystem for the first time.

Familiar code, complex history

The choice of the $BUSD code inevitably triggered discussion. The code was previously associated with Binance USD, a stablecoin launched by Binance in partnership with Paxos. Before the termination of the issuance, the market value of BUSD peaked at US$23 billion in November 2022, making it one of the largest stablecoins on the market. Binance's stablecoins came under regulatory review after the New York Department of Financial Services ordered Paxos to stop issuing, and Binance eventually stopped supporting BUSD.

This history has brought some "baggage" to the code, but the Berachain version has a completely different product structure and runs on a separate chain. Berachain is an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that ensures security through a proof of liquidity mechanism and rewards users who provide liquidity. It adopts a triple token economic model: BERA is used for transactions and pledges, BGT is used for governance, and stablecoins serve the entire ecosystem. It remains to be seen whether sharing code will cause confusion or simply borrow the recognition of the name.

For now, the rebranding reflects a broader trend among DeFi-native projects-institutional capital is recalibrating its own messaging as it increasingly focuses on on-chain infrastructure. Names like Bera USD can let people see its function at a glance. The question is whether the market is more concerned about the clarity of the new name or the history borne by the "borrowed" code.
