Zcash launches network upgrade 7 (NU7) community vote
The Zcash team is soliciting community opinions on its next major protocol upgrade plan. Holder voting and advisory group voting will close at 19:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on Monday. The result of this vote will determine the specific scope of Network Upgrade 7 (NU7), which becomes Zcash's ninth major network upgrade.
Detailed explanation of voting issues
This voting includes a total of five independent issues. The first two questions involve the "network sustainability mechanism": one is whether the circulation of $ZEC should be smoothed instead of maintaining the current halving mechanism; the other is when previously cancelled funds will start to re-enter circulation. This mechanism aims to ensure continued and stable mining incentives without exceeding the 21 million coin cap. Zcash currently has a destruction mechanism to remove $ZEC in circulation, and NU7 regulates the reissuance of this part of the funds.
The third question concerns retiring the outdated Sprout pool; the fourth question is the recommendation to shorten the block-target interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, thereby tripling transaction throughput.
The fifth question may be decisive in terms of timing. It covers functions that cannot be completed by the deadline, and the target implementation date is set at September 30, 2026. Options include: launching NU7 as soon as possible but eliminating unfinished functions, postponing the launch until all functions are complete, or completely rejecting the implementation of NU7.
Zcash officially confirmed that regardless of the voting result, the total supply of $ZEC will not be affected, and the voting result of the advisory team is not binding.
Voting Mechanism and Rules
Voting for NU7 holders will start on August 25, 2026 and is expected to end at 19:00 UTC on September 14 for approximately 18 days. Valar Group and Project Tachyon initiated the vote.
To ensure representativeness of the results, organizers set a participation threshold of 1 million ZEC. Unlike governance mechanisms based on verifier participation or delegated voting, this process gives eligible ZEC holders voting rights linked to their blocked asset positions.
The voting process is completely anonymous, using ElGamal homomorphic cryptography technology to hide personal voting data, and only the final aggregation results are displayed. Eligibility requires ZEC to be in a expendable and masked state when the snapshot block height is approximately 3,459,350 and stored in the Ironwood pool. Supported wallets include Vizor, Zodl, Zkool and Keystone hardware devices.
If NU7 contains significant consensus changes as expected, it will no longer be supported by zcashd and users will need to upgrade to the Zebra consensus node developed by the Zcash Foundation.
