Sui returns revenue after you delete data

How Sui Deposit Funds Works

Every transaction on @SuiNetwork includes two costs: calculation fees and storage fees. Although the computing portion is paid directly to the verifier as usual, the storage component is handled differently.

Storage fees charged in transactions are not directly allocated to the verifier, but instead enter a "storage fund." The fund solves long-term costs by charging fees when data is created and reallocating it to verifiers throughout the period of data being stored up-chain. During each cycle (Epoch), the foundation makes a pledge, and the pledge rewards it generates help compensate the income of active verifiers.

From a practical perspective, a storage fund is a tool to transfer Gas Fees across cycles, ensuring that future validators can be compensated by fees paid by past users for creating storage needs.

Delete data to retrieve $SUI

Another user-facing feature of the system is a refund mechanism. In the Sui storage fund model, users need to pay in advance for permanently storing data, but if previously stored data is deleted, users can receive a partial refund.

The refundable amount is equivalent to 99% of the storage fee, and the non-refundable amount is the remaining 1%. The types of data that can be deleted include data related to objects that are no longer active, such as NFT metadata, redeemed tickets, or closed auction information.

It is worth noting that deleting operations should not be confused with deleting past transactions. Activity on Sui ultimately determines at each cycle boundary that past transactions are immutable and can never be reversed. In addition, there is a strict restriction: immutable objects cannot be deleted. Any $SUI locked in storage fees for these objects will not be refunded.

The mechanism for storing funds also encourages users to delete data when storage costs exceed the value retained on the chain, introducing a market-based mechanism that encourages users to free up space when data is no longer useful. This has a broader supply effect: as the fund expands, the proportion of the total $SUI supply it holds increases, effectively removing this token from active circulation. With the total supply cap of 10 billion pieces, any continued decrease in circulation while demand remains stable or growing will put upward pressure on prices.
