The Adapter upgrade officially takes effect on the main network
On September 16, 2026, after the validator voted to pass, Stellar (@StellarOrg)'s Protocol 28 (codenamed "Adapter") was officially launched on the main network. The upgrade was activated within hours of the vote, marking that the version previously running on the testnet officially entered the full deployment phase.
This is a key release for developers: most of the features are designed to simplify the development process of Stellar smart contracts, and an underlying core change helps the network continue to expand while reaching consensus faster.
Core changes in this upgrade
This Adapter upgrade integrates three separate technical proposals:
- CAP-83: Optimizing consensus process bottlenecks
This is the most influential infrastructure change. Currently, verifiers need to wait for the complete transaction set to arrive before confirming the next ledger. CAP-83 allows verifiers to start voting before the complete transaction set has not yet arrived, ensuring that the consensus process continues even if transaction data spreads slowly through the network. - CAP-85: Batch upgrades of smart contracts
At the smart contract level, CAP-85 allows unified upgrades for contract groups that share the same code, replacing the previous one-by-one update method. It introduces an updatable shared code reference that multiple contracts can point to. Simply change this single reference and all associated contracts will be upgraded simultaneously, regardless of the number of contracts. - CAP-86: Streamlining contract data migration
The third proposal, CAP-86, reduces the complexity of contract data migration during structural updates, reducing friction for developers managing evolving applications.
As the parallel transaction set download function is gradually enabled on the main network, the performance improvement effect will appear in stages. Stellar said the upgrade is designed to support larger and more complex application scenarios on the network.
For ordinary users, these changes are not significantly perceived on the surface. The way the daily payment system operates remains unchanged, but in the background, the ability to process growth has been substantially enhanced.
