Nearly $4 billion surge: LayerZero recorded the largest one-day TVL increase in DeFi this year
LayerZero recorded one of the largest one-day total locked value (TVL) changes in decentralized finance (DeFi) this year. Between October 2 and October 3, the agreement's TVL soared from $7.85 billion to $11.71 billion, an increase of approximately $3.9 billion, or nearly 49%, according to DefiLlama.
The surge lifted LayerZero to ninth place in the overall DeFi rankings and triggered volatility alerts that are usually issued only for top-level protocols. Although the exact cause of the change has not yet been confirmed, the timing coincides with renewed interest in the agreement.
A challenging year, but momentum is gathering
The surge in TVL is welcome news for an agreement that has gone through a difficult period in 2026. Earlier this year, a $292 million vulnerability occurred in an application connected to LayerZero, prompting the team to overhaul its security model, obsolete the single verifier configuration and make multiple independent verifiers the new default.
In addition to security improvements, LayerZero is also moving towards wider expansion. In February 2026, LayerZero Labs released Zero, a stand-alone Layer-1 blockchain for institutional financial markets that is expected to launch on the main network in the fall of 2026. The chain is designed to leverage zero-knowledge proof technology to process up to 2 million transactions per second in each region, and through horizontal expansion, its total throughput could reach 5 million transactions per second.
In terms of tokens,$ZRO has rebounded strongly from lows. Continued open market repurchase programs, institutional partnerships and growing ecosystem activity helped the token gain more than 100% in the 30 days leading up to early October. However, 23.63 million ZRO tokens will be unlocked on October 20, which remains a potential short-term pressure that traders need to pay attention to.
Combined with improving market position, TVL readings suggest that confidence in LayerZero's infrastructure role is returning, although the exact catalyst for the October 2 - 3 surge remains unclear.
