MetaMask quits Lido Ethereum Verification Node due to a security incident
Recently, MetaMask Staking announced that it has gradually withdrawn from the Ethereum Verification Node in the Lido protocol due to a security incident on some infrastructure. According to Lido, the final verification node is expected to complete the exit process before October 7, 2026.
MetaMask is actively responding to this security incident that affects some of its infrastructure. Although the wallet provider has made it clear that it has not found any direct and immediate threats to users 'wallets, the preventive measures it has taken are still of great significance and deserve close attention from the market. In a direct response to the incident, MetaMask Staking, formerly known as Consensus Staking, has initiated the withdrawal of the Ethereum verification node from the Lido protocol. The exit process is coordinated with clients, partners and external security consultants.
Lido confirmed that the exit operation has started this week, and the final exit work of all verification nodes is expected to be completed on October 7, 2026. At present, the specific nature, causes and scope of the affected infrastructure have not been disclosed to the public. In addition, MetaMask confirmed that it is working with external partners to actively repair relevant issues internally.
Where will the exiting ETH go?
Ethereum (ETH) extracted from the MetaMask Staking verification node does not disappear. As each verification node completes the cycle of exit, extraction, and re-entry in turn, these assets will gradually return to the Lido protocol. According to Will Shannon, developer of Lido Finance, this process may take up to 45 days due to the current long admission queue on the network.
In addition, Lido made it clear that stETH holders do not need to take any action. Lido's diverse collection of node operators, coupled with its temporary reserves of more than 6,750 stETH, are designed to absorb and contain such interruptions and ensure that normal operation of the agreement is not affected.
Important clarification: Unmanaged model
MetaMask emphasizes that its pledge business adopts an unmanaged model. The company does not manage the extraction keys of pledged ETH on behalf of customers. Therefore, the exit process is a protective measure rather than a financial recovery operation.
Market Impact and Outlook
Although the risk of directly threatening users 'wallets has not been confirmed, security incidents at the MetaMask infrastructure level cannot be ignored. As one of the most widely used Ethereum wallets in the world, if its back-end infrastructure is compromised, it will inevitably raise questions about how the attacker obtains access rights and what data or systems are exposed.
At the same time, exiting the verification node from Lido means giving up potential pledge gains. If you quickly go offline to verify nodes to reduce the risk of network penalties, you may also face possible downtime penalties. MetaMask is bearing this financial cost to protect the safety of client assets.
The investigation is still in progress, and the next update will have a significant impact on the market and the broader Ethereum pledge community.
