Dogcoin co-founder parody Trump's "$5000 dividend" proposal: Suggest the government purchase $1.2 trillion in Dogcoin and distribute it to the public
Dogcoin Billy Markus, co-founder of Dogecoin, satirized President Donald Trump's plan to pay a $5000 "dividend" to each citizen and proposed a more exaggerated idea: He argued that the government should spend $1.2 trillion to buy Dogecoin and distribute it to the American people.
The account name Marcus uses on social media platform X is "Shibetoshi Nakamoto". His remarks were a response to Trump's promise to pay $5000 to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans continue to control the House and Senate in November's midterm elections.
The real dilemma behind the plan
As of now, Trump has not explained the source of funding and how these payments will be implemented. Reuters reported that considering the U.S. population of approximately 270 million adults, the plan could cost more than $1 trillion and would likely require congressional approval to implement it.
Marcus's Views and Intention
In a post posted on September 12, Marcus bluntly stated that the idea of "dividends" is "obviously stupid and inflationary, and we don't need inflation more now." Later, he threw out a suggestion about dogcoin, accompanied by a laughing emoji, making it clear that the $1.2 trillion purchase plan was just a joke and not a formal policy proposal.
"Instead, the government should buy $1.2 trillion worth of Dogecoin and distribute it to every American," he wrote in the post.
The core of this joke is its absurd scale. According to CoinMarketCap, the current market value of Dogecoin is approximately US$14.6 billion. As a result, Marcus's hypothetical purchase amount is approximately 82 times the current total value of the asset. An acquisition of this magnitude simply cannot be executed at current prices, it will face limited liquidity issues and drive up prices as buyers compete for available tokens.
Why Choose Dogecoin as a carrier of irony
Marcus co-created Dogecoin with Jackson Palmer in 2013, with the original intention of satirizing the growing cryptocurrency market at the time. There is no maximum supply limit for dogcoin, and about 5 billion new tokens are added every year.
This fixed annual issuance means that the inflation rate of Dogecoin will gradually decrease as the total supply increases. This also makes Dogecoin an ideal vehicle for Marcus to use to satirize government payment plans that he believes have inflation risks.
As of September 14, the trading price of Dogecoin was close to US$0.085.
