ETH EU regulators warn that quantum computing could threaten blockchain security
The EU financial regulator issued a warning pointing out that advances in quantum computing pose potential risks that the technology could undermine the encryption system that protects blockchain and other digital financial infrastructure. Regulators have emphasized that the development of quantum computing could pose a threat to encryption technologies used to protect transactions, communications and data storage.
Regulators highlight the impact of quantum risk on cryptography
The European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) jointly issued a risk alert on Wednesday, emphasizing that the development of quantum computing could threaten encryption technology used to protect transactions, communications and data storage. Their concerns stem from recent discoveries by Google's quantum AI team. In March, researchers at Google estimated that a quantum computer capable of cracking the encryption algorithms used in most cryptocurrencies would require about 20 times fewer physical qubits than previously thought. Each qubit is the basic building block of a quantum computer and determines its processing power.
Currently, no quantum computer has the ability to perform such attacks. However, regulators have warned that the evolution of quantum computing technology is still advancing rapidly, so proactive risk assessments of the security of digital finance must be carried out.
