US FASB proposes conditions for treating stablecoins as cash equivalents

The U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has provided guidance on what circumstances some stablecoins can be classified as cash equivalents

The U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) recently issued a proposed guidance to define when companies can consider specific stablecoins as cash equivalents under U.S. GAAP. On Tuesday, the FASB announced that the proposed accounting standards update will add illustrative examples to current definitions to address inconsistent accounting treatment of digital assets such as stablecoins, while the definition itself remains unchanged.

The proposed content states that eligible digital assets must meet the following conditions: they have the contractual right to redemption on demand; the holder can directly redeem the issuer at a known cash amount; and the issuer holds at least a short-term highly liquid asset reserve segregated on a one-to-one ratio. One example highlights that even an active secondary market cannot meet the requirements if the holder lacks the right to redeem directly from the issuer. Another example points out that if the reserve asset contains cryptocurrency or gold, the relevant token is not eligible due to valuation risk.

Companies can still choose whether to list eligible assets as cash equivalents, but need to consider relevant laws and regulations. The FASB will solicit public comments on the proposed update with a deadline of November 19 and will determine an effective date after reviewing feedback from stakeholders.
