Coinbase launches cryptocurrency derivatives trading in Canada

Coinbase has launched cryptocurrency derivatives trading in Canada to provide local users with perpetual contracts and term futures related to major digital assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). The move allows more Canadian users to have access to native cryptocurrency contract products, while U.S. trading companies continue to expand their Canadian business.

These contracts are offered through Coinbase Financial Markets, a futures commission trader registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and operating in Canada under the Foreign Dealer and Futures Commission Exemption Clause. Coinbase said that the launch includes 23 cryptocurrency perpetual contracts and term futures, 5 commodity futures, and the Coinbase 50 Index.

Highlights

Coinbase calls it the first "major native cryptocurrency platform" in Canada to offer direct native cryptocurrency futures. The Canadian product is available only to eligible customers and includes 23 cryptocurrency perpetual contracts and term futures, as well as the Coinbase 50 Index. According to Coinbase, the leverage limit is 10 times, and the contract adopts a micro position structure.

Why now: U.S. platforms expand north

The background of Coinbase's launch of products in Canada is that other U.S. -oriented trading platforms are also expanding the scope of crypto asset services in the country. On Monday, Webull opened up cryptocurrency trading to Canadian customers. Webull said the change uses Coinbase's trading and custody infrastructure and adds digital assets to its existing equity, ETF and options products. The announcement pointed out that the adoption rate of crypto assets in Canada is rising. According to media reports, research by the Ontario Securities Commission shows that Canada's crypto-asset holdings will climb from 10% in 2023 to 25% in 2025. Robinhood also entered the Canadian market through the acquisition of WonderFi, with a reported transaction value of US$180 million. The deal gave Robinhood control of Canadian exchanges Bitbuy and Coinsquare and brought in approximately 300,000 paying customers, as well as WonderFi's license and regulatory approval in Canada.

Overall, these expansions suggest that Canada is becoming an active market for a variety of trading methods such as spot trading, custodian related brokerage and derivatives. For traders, this means more platforms and product varieties, as well as complexity in product structure and regulation.

Canadian regulatory tightening simultaneously

As derivatives trading channels expand, Canada is also tightening regulations on other areas of the crypto ecosystem. According to previous reports, the Canadian government proposed in April to ban cryptocurrency ATMs due to concerns that they would be used for fraud and money laundering. Lawmakers have also advanced bills that would ban cryptocurrency donations to political parties and candidates. These proposals reflect regulatory push for specific high-risk use cases rather than a comprehensive ban on encryption activities. For market participants, the contrast is noteworthy: mainstream trading channels are growing, while policymakers are simultaneously trying to reduce channels that are abused. This may affect where growth is concentrated-regulated trading and investment structures may be preferred over uncontrolled entrances.

What Canadian derivatives users should focus on next

Coinbase's derivatives launch is most likely to attract qualified institutions or high net worth traders seeking futures based, with clear leverage and contract specifications. The key question is how quickly liquidity and participation in these Canadian products will be established, and whether there will be more platforms to follow up on the launch of similar direct futures products. Regulatory development will remain a core factor. As Canada continues to adjust its attitude towards crypto assets-from enforcement of specific activities such as ATMs and donations to regulation of traded products-market access is likely to continue to evolve in both directions.
