Since the launch of U.S. spot products in January 2024, Bitcoin ETFs have demonstrated rapid asset accumulation capabilities. Data showed that Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs attracted US$2.6 billion in capital inflows in a given week, the strongest weekly inflow since October last year, a data point that confirms Balchunas forecast demand trends.
Why the comparison between Bitcoin ETFs and gold ETFs is crucial
The comparison here refers specifically to the size of assets under management (AUM) under the ETF instrument, rather than directly asserting the price level of Bitcoin relative to gold. ETF assets reflect the amount of money investors choose to allocate through exchange-traded vehicles, so they are a specific measure of institutional and retail market demand for regulated exposure.
The gold ETF represented by the SPDR gold share fund has a huge asset base after more than 20 years of trading accumulation. If Bitcoin ETFs want to close this gap or even surpass the asset size of gold ETFs, they need to continue to receive capital inflows at a rate that exceeds the growth rate of gold's own ETF. Harvard University tripled its Bitcoin ETF holdings to $442.8 million, indicating that institutional adoption rates have exceeded the positioning stage of early adopters.
In addition, this comparison also reflects Bitcoin's monetary nature argument: As a fixed supply asset, Bitcoin is competing with gold for the role of a neutral reserve asset in the portfolio. Analysts tracking ETF traffic view asset balance or even asset dominance as a measurable proxy measure of whether the currency attribute argument is accepted by institutions.
Weekly traffic data further confirms this direction. Even with weekly totals remaining constant, the Bitcoin ETF recorded an inflow of $433 million on Friday, indicating a lasting benchmark of demand rather than an occasional surge.
Key Points
Point 1: According to Balchunas, the asset size of a Bitcoin ETF is expected to reach three times that of a gold ETF. This forecast is based on the growth rate of spot bitcoin products in the United States since approval.
Point 2: This forecast depends on future investor adoption and market conditions. The forecast is not accompanied by specific asset totals, timetables or price targets and should be regarded as an analyst's opinion rather than a guaranteed result.
Bitcoin's network fundamentals provide the basis for any long-term ETF asset forecast. The agreement's fixed supply of 21 million coins is enforced by a proof-of-work difficulty adjustment mechanism executed per 2016 blocks, which lays the foundation for its currency comparison with gold. Whether ETF assets ultimately reflect this scarcity argument at the scale described by Balchunas will depend on how institutional allocators view Bitcoin's next halving cycle and the regulatory environment in which they operate.
