Bitcoin broke through the US$85,400 mark, driven by ETF inflows and short liquidations.
On September 21, Bitcoin prices soared more than US$85,400, the highest level since late January., and continued the recovery after the recent sell-off. This strong rebound was mainly driven by a large inflow of U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and a wave of short clearing, injecting new upward momentum into the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation.
ETF inflows and clearing data support market rebound
Bitcoin prices have risen 5.5% in the past 24 hours, pushing its total market value to US$1.71 trillion. The broader cryptocurrency market also rose simultaneously, rising 4.7%, and the total market value rose to US$2.95 trillion. Although mainstream altcoins have regained favor among investors, causing Bitcoin's market dominance to fall below 58%, overall market sentiment remains optimistic.
According to SoSoValue, the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF attracted a total of US$593 million in inflows on Thursday and Friday. Among them, the largest single inflow on Friday reached $433 million, led mainly by Fidelity's FBTC products and BlackRock's IBIT products.
As prices climbed, short traders suffered heavy losses. In the past 24 hours,$787 million worth of crypto asset positions were liquidated, of which $664.3 million were short positions. Among these liquidations, Bitcoin transactions accounted for $431.7 million, including the largest single clearing order of $11.29 million in the Binance platform BTC/USDT trading pair.
Glassnode analysts pointed out on the X platform that over the past few months, short positions have accumulated heavily in the US$82,000 to US$86,000 range, but the rejection correction in this range is shallow. Today, these short positions are becoming fuel for driving up the market as traders are forced to buy bitcoin to close their positions and stop losses.
This "short" market triggers a feedback loop: as Bitcoin prices rise, further short liquidations increase buying pressure, helping to maintain upward price momentum.
Institutional trends and market macro dynamics
Strategy Inc., a Nasdaq-listed company that focuses on aggressive bitcoin accumulation strategies, purchased approximately 950 bitcoins last week, at a total cost of approximately US$75.7 million. During the period from September 14 to September 20, its average bid price was US$79,670 per Bitcoin. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor confirmed that the company currently holds 846,000 bitcoins, worth approximately $71.9 billion at current prices. The company's average cost of holding a position is US$75,416 per Bitcoin.
Other macroeconomic factors have also contributed to positive market sentiment. Brent crude oil prices fell about 1.5% on Monday, helped by improved oil supplies and diplomatic efforts with Iran, which eased some inflationary pressures and supported risky assets, including cryptocurrencies.
However, policy risks remain unresolved. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate target by 25 basis points on September 16, putting the federal funds rate in the range of 3.75% to 4%. Despite the move, Bitcoin rebounded from near $75,000 after interest rate hikes, while also offsetting the negative impact of stalled progress on the U.S. Senate Clarity Act.
Crypto analyst Ted Pillows pointed out that there appear to be no major sell orders before $88,000, which means Bitcoin could extend its rally further. Still, Pillows emphasized that liquidity is much higher in the downward direction than in the upward direction, indicating potential risks if market sentiment shifts.
