Which altcoins are rising while Bitcoin is falling?

Although Bitcoin retreated 8% this week, the altcoin market was barely affected. Derivatives data confirms this: open interest in altcoin futures exceeds Bitcoin for the first time (since 2024), meaning traders are actively deploying altcoins rather than just hiding in Bitcoin. When Bitcoin's dominance declines and overall market activity remains high, altcoin traders often interpret this as an early sign of a positive phase for the altcoin. But one thing to note: Leverage-based rotations could quickly disintegrate, as last week's $80 million liquidations reminded.

Are privacy coins the biggest winner in 2026?

This year's standout story continues to escalate. Zcash (ZEC) is trading at $1,574, up 6.30% this week and up a staggering 207% year-to-date, firmly in the top 10. Zooming in further, the trend is historic: Glassnode data shows ZEC's rise of about 2,500 percent over the past year, taking it from 82nd to the top 10 by market cap, a height not seen since 2016. A number of factors contributed to this upsurge. Grayscale converted its Zcash trust to ZCSH, the first U.S. spot ETF built around privacy coins, opening the door to institutional funds. One dark cloud in the outlook: New EU regulations expected to take effect in mid-2027 will ban the listing of privacy coins such as Zcash and Monero on regulated exchanges, so the final regulatory outcome of this rally is far from certain.
