Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis is advancing artificial intelligence regulations despite opposition from the White House. After initially showing enthusiasm for investment, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott shifted his attitude towards certain aspects of data center growth, saying "they got the response they deserved." The state's action escalated further: Texas suspended issuing new data center licenses pending an assessment of the impact on the power grid. According to the executive order, more than 470 gigawatts of potential projects are seeking access to the power grid, nearly six times the peak electricity consumption in Texas.
Pressure is spreading to the Republican vote where Trump is still popular. In Berkeley County, West Virginia, a planned $4 billion data center has encountered local opposition. Republican Chris Anders believes that although he supports Trump in 2024, the dispute could threaten his state Legislature seat. "I'm fighting for survival right now," Chris said."I support the president in 2024, but that doesn't mean I'm exactly in step with him."
Back in Washington, Brendan and other conservative activists are still trying to change Trump's stance from within the Republican Party. Activists also advanced more personal arguments to Trump. They warned that an advanced AI system capable of breaking through financial infrastructure could theoretically affect bank accounts, financial networks and even his family's wealth.
