Bitcoin ends third quarter: Fourth-quarter test behind 43% gain
Bitcoin achieved a gain of about 43% in the third quarter, but this quarter's strong performance also sets a higher threshold for the fourth quarter: Markets are testing whether this recovery can be sustained in a macro environment that is still influenced by Fed policy decisions and fluctuations in government bond yields.
The recovery in the third quarter sets a difficult benchmark for the fourth quarter
43% volatility during the quarter is not an easy starting point. Analyst firm CryptoPotato pointed out that the core issue in the fourth quarter is not whether momentum continues, but whether prices can hold on to key technical support levels when the tailwind effect in the third quarter subsides. When risky assets rebound so sharply, subsequent movements need to be confirmed. The driving mechanism that also pushed Bitcoin to fall below $79,000 when employment data was released and raised concerns about the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike remained active until the end of the year.
The analysis regards a single price level as a key signal for the fourth quarter. If we can achieve sustained stability above this level, it will confirm that the recovery has structural significance rather than purely repercussions; if we fall below this level, it may start a deeper correction period before the end of the year.
How the Federal Reserve and bond yields affect Bitcoin's fourth-quarter trend
The Federal Reserve's September 2025 policy decision remains an important reference point for observing the evolution of liquidity conditions. Interest rate policy affects Bitcoin in two steps: Federal Reserve decisions affect Treasury yields, which in turn determines the opportunity cost of holding non-interest-bearing assets such as Bitcoin. Early in the cycle, when the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, Bitcoin prices responded immediately, which clearly demonstrated the tightness of this transmission channel.
When yields fall, Bitcoin's relative appeal increases, and the risk appetite for digital assets tends to expand accordingly. When yields rise, tight financial conditions attract funds to fixed-income products. During this cycle, the market has repeatedly repriced Bitcoin based on Federal Reserve signals; when inflation data was lower than expected, Bitcoin and Ripple (XRP) rose simultaneously, highlighting the close connection between the risk appetite of crypto assets and the surprises of macro data.
The US dollar is the third variable in this chain. Restrictive monetary policies tend to strengthen the U.S. dollar, which historically has often created headwinds on dollar-denominated bitcoin. Therefore, in the fourth quarter, focusing on the combination of ten-year Treasury yields and Fed communications was more important than tracking any single price indicator in isolation.
Two scenarios around key levels
A bullish scenario in the fourth quarter requires two conditions to be met simultaneously: Bitcoin holds its key technical levels, while Treasury yields weaken or at least stop climbing. If the Federal Reserve signals to stop tightening policy and long-term yields fall back, the liquidity background that drove gains in the third quarter may continue, giving Bitcoin the strength to consolidate its recovery rather than just defend itself.
A bearish scenario is simpler. If yields continue to climb due to stronger-than-expected economic data, or the Federal Reserve hints that interest rates will remain at higher levels for longer, then key price levels will shift from support to resistance. Earlier in the cycle, Fed officials 'downplay of milder inflation data was enough to drive Bitcoin down sharply, demonstrating that policy rhetoric alone can quickly change market sentiment.
Entering the fourth quarter, the connection between macro and technical signals has become extremely close. The price level is important precisely because the macro background is not yet clear; and the macro background is critical because Bitcoin's third-quarter increase left it lacking sufficient technical buffer space when conditions deteriorate. Monitoring changes in the yield curve, the Federal Reserve's forward-looking guidance, and key bitcoin price levels can provide a more comprehensive assessment of risk in the fourth quarter than a single signal.
