Brazil's election is approaching, and the US$252.5 billion crypto market is ushering in new regulatory regulations.
According to the latest poll released by research firm Datafolha, the high-profile Brazilian election will kick off on October 4. In the final poll, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva led Flavio Bossonaro with 45%, with a narrow gap. The poll, based on interviews with 4,006 respondents in 122 cities, highlighted the stalemate in the election. Voters will vote between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Brasilia time. Brazil's High Electoral Court estimates that the total number of voters in this election will be 158.7 million.
Elections advance in sync with changes in cryptocurrency regulation
This election comes as Brazil's cryptocurrency industry is undergoing major changes, which is adapting to the new regulatory framework implemented by the current Lula government. As the main monetary authority, the Central Bank of Brazil has introduced a series of regulations that affect the authorization, governance, consumer protection, anti-money laundering and internal control of virtual asset service providers.
Regardless of the outcome of the presidential election, these measures will be crucial to cryptocurrency companies, as many of the new requirements are already in effect or are about to be implemented. The central bank requires virtual asset providers to obtain legal authorization to operate, and relevant foreign exchange regulations now cover certain international transfer transactions involving virtual assets and fiat reference assets.
In a recent regulatory initiative, Resolution BCB 588, which took effect on October 1, stipulates that financial institutions must report to the National Financial Intelligence Unit (Coaf) cryptocurrency transfers worth more than $10,000 to or from self-managed wallets. The rules do not prohibit self-custody or setting transaction caps, but instead introduce stricter reporting mechanisms to track the flow of digital assets in wallets that rely on users 'private keys. The central bank said the changes are aimed at strengthening surveillance of the sector and improving risk management capabilities.
These regulatory frameworks are expected to remain unchanged regardless of a regime change after October 4. Any amendments or new measures will need to follow Brazil's formal legislative and regulatory procedures.
Crypto-economy expansion and compliance deadlines
Global blockchain analysis company Chainalysis listed Brazil first in its 2026 Global Cryptocurrency Adoption Index. The company estimates the size of Brazil's crypto economy at US$252.5 billion, citing its high level of adoption in four key categories: cross-border capital flows, total service flows, domestic peer-to-peer transactions, and on-chain balances.
Although Brazil does not top the list in any single index, it consistently ranks among the top in the world in all indicators. This comprehensive advantage gave Brazil the highest score for grassroots cryptocurrency adoption in 2026. stablecoins have played a significant role in the Brazilian market. According to Chainalysis, cryptoeconomies across Latin America grew by 9.8%, while Brazil remains the largest contributor to the region. At the same time, Brazil's overall economy contracted by 1.6% over the same period.
Brazil's High Electoral Court (TSE) confirmed that if no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes on October 4, a second round of voting will be held on October 25. Political leadership may change, but the central bank's cryptocurrency regulation will remain in effect during the transition period. After the election, companies need to meet new compliance deadlines. Resolution BCB 589, which will take effect on November 6, restricts certain transactions between central bank-regulated entities and virtual asset service providers that lack appropriate authorization, and lists specific exemptions.
