Tether
Conduit's lawsuit is not isolated. A few weeks ago, there was a similar case in the same court. On August 31, Thai businessmen Nutthawat Rukthammachalern and Natthawat Kasamvilas filed a lawsuit against Tether for approximately US$42.4 million in USDT being frozen at 10 Ethereum addresses. They allege that Tether blacklisted the addresses on October 30, 2025, at an informal request from U.S. law enforcement agencies, while the judge issued the seizure order nearly four months late until February 19.
The plaintiffs argued that since Tether mainly used interest-bearing instruments (such as U.S. Treasury bonds) to support its reserves, freezing wallets would be of zero cost to the company, but it could continue to collect income. This mechanism is believed to constitute a financial incentive to freeze and hold funds.
In February, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told Congress that the GENIUS Act allows stablecoin companies to "profit from fraud" by retaining funds and interest rather than returning funds to victims. In addition, on September 28, a Senate subcommittee led by Richard Blumenthal asked the Treasury and Justice Departments to investigate Tether's sanctions compliance and anti-money laundering. It previously found that 84% of the 846 Iran-related wallets, almost all of them use USDT for transactions.
